With a player like Rondo, you can't bully him into doing things your way. He's too smart for that. If you want to get the most out of Rondo, you need to give him some degree of creative freedom, otherwise he will get bored and complacent. This is why he got along well with Doc Rivers. Doc gave him enough freedom to be himself, but there was a mutual respect where Rondo wouldn't cross certain boundaries.
If you want a PG who simply follows the system and doesn't stray, you are wasting your time with Rondo.
Ummm, that's not actually true. One thing Karl does as well as any coach is devise his schemes to fit the personnel he's given.
He might be aware of great ways to utilize his personnel, but that doesn't mean he knows how to motivate them. His insistence on Melo bullying inside for buckets, or insulting JR Smith after bad shots - those aren't great ways to encourage players to work to their strengths.
For example, one thing the Cavs did with JR Smith that really helped him was to tell him he was free to shoot from the very beginning. They allowed him to play instead of second guess himself constantly. For other players, this may not be the best approach. For JR Smith, this is great.
Melo needed to bully inside for baskets, when Karl got to Denver Melo loved to take the long 2s, Karl turned him into a guy that enjoyed the paint, got to the line more, and once Melo developed his outside shot he did well in Denver.
Now you want to talk about JR Smith, that is great lets do that. But 1st you should educate yourself on Jr Smith's career more than the last couple of years. You see JR put up the best stats and advanced stats of his career under Karl, if anybody on this board should be talking about what makes JR thrive it is Nuggets fans, we saw him at his best which just happens to be under Karl.
Karl is good at helping players play to their strength that is what he does well, anybody who has followed any of his teams know that well. He sucks at in game adjustments, and he is not the best defensive coach, and he eventually pisses off his most talented players, but he gets the most out of his players and they win games.
