I'm impressed his turnovers are down so much from college. He also looks to have worked on his body a lot over the summer. So far, impressive. That coverage on him last night was pathetic though.

Right,I doubt Young averages close to those numbers against teams not switching everything.
Sexton locked him up in college, the Cavs gifted the Hawks a franchise record of made 3s with their poor execution after the tip.
Cavs played better against 2 playoff teams than they did against atl.

I don't understand these comparisons. People do realize that Trae's vision is elite? In what world is that the case or even close to the case for players like Lillard or Jennings?

No comp for any player is going to be exact but I'm hoping you don't actually view the Lillard comparison as some sort of insult?

As for Jennings, he averaged 22/6 his first month as an NBA player at the same age as Young and in a similar situation. The point there is every great looking rookie doesn't automatically become a star

I'm NOT saying he's anywhere actually remotely on his level but Young's game reminds me most of Steve Nash and that's who he should pattern his game after imo.

No, i dont. was it an excellent game? yes. does it deserve its own thread on the general board for conversation? absolutely not... sure if hawks fans want their own thread on their forum that makes sense.

but its really not worth general dicsussion. a rooke had an great game in week 1. happens multiple times every year. its one game, not indicitative of anything. same as if he sucked 3 games in a row, not worth a thread

I get where you're coming from and I agree that a few games aren't necessarily indicative of how good a player will be, but Jennings still isn't a great comparison. Jennings didn't have range in college nor was he a particularly efficient scorer, either. Even in his first month he wasn't particularly efficient offensively but he was more efficient because he was hitting basically 50% of his 3s - he was shooting better from 3 than from 2 at that point. It was clearly unsustainable given his history and all the other parts of his game suggested as much, and when his 3P% normalized his efficiency dropped even more.

Young is surely going to have bumps in the road, too, and it's only been 3 games. We will see what he can and can't do over time. I don't love that Jennings comparison, though in large part because he already has a track record of being a much better shooter than Jennings and he isn't actually hitting shots at an unsustainable rate right now. If Jennings could shoot, he'd have been a regular allstar. Young is a better shooter than Jennings. Where he winds up is anyone's guess but that Jennings comparison isn't a great one, really.

It's not an insult, I just don't understand the comparison.

As for Jennings being thrown around so much, let's not use the exception to the rule scenario over and over. Jennings had nowhere near the bball IQ that Trae has anyways.

It's not surprising. Defenses were completely focusing on Trae when he was at college, because there were no other real offensive threats on the team.

I see simialrties with the Lillard/Curry/Walker type of PG and I saw those similarities when he was in college too. Thst doesn’t mean they’re all exactly the same player but they have a lot of similar strengths and weaknesses. You’re free to disagree.

For the record, I don’t think Young will end up like Jennings, I would just like to see a bigger sample before putting the future superstar label on him. He was my 3rd favourite player in this year’s draft behind Doncic and Ayton and it’s possible I underrated him.

But remember we have the value of hindsight from a disappointing career when picking Jennings obvious flaws apart, that wasn’t as easy to do 3-4 weeks into his career. Heck he might have plateaued 4 weeks into his career which seems almost impossible.

Face it this guy gets hate because he was traded for the European golden boy. Young has potential to be an outstanding player

Are you honestly suggesting that Euros get high praise in the NBA? Are you kidding me? They are booed at every turn, hated, nitpicked, and considered a bust before they even play a single game.

I’m not saying that. What I am saying is luka specifically has been anointed a generational talent by fans and the media. Now that may or may not come to fruition, but Young’s only sin is that he was traded for Luka.

Anyone think Dallas is regretting the trade for Doncic?

Probably not. It really depends on what the Dallas pick ends up being next year.

I never complained about this thread exsisting, i was asked if i thought this was GB thread worthy and i said no.

My whole point was trying to extrapolate that Trae is a star from 1 game is just as silly as people extrapolating he was a bust from preseason or summer league.

knee-jerk reactions.

ugh

22.5 PER in Vegas Summer League
18.5 PER in Preseason

How does anyone claim him to be a bust based of his preseason and summer performances. It was a heck of a lot better than a lot of recent performances by rookies who ended up panning quite well so far.

If anything, it seems to me like a lot of posters are hoping he becomes a bust.

:/

Why would they at this point?

Doncic: 18ppg / 5.5rpg / 7apg / 1spg
Young: 23ppg / 3.3rpg / 8apg / 1spg

Not even sure why you would ask that after a whoping 3 whole games.

You are acting like the general board has some extreme level of thought behind it when in reality it's littered with threads much worse than this one.
