So every one of you who plays DFS or any other type of auction fantasy draft is actually playing Fantasy Slavery.
Shame on you.

Besides the whole slavery thing, how does this eliminate tanking completely though? Wouldn't some teams still be looking to free up enough salary cap space to possibly offer the most money for an NBA prospect?

Yes. Although, you aren't incentived to lose. You have the opportunity to create "Moneyball" type situations. Shed salary, try to pick up another "1sr Rd pick" but still sneak into the playoffs would become the ideal situation for mediocre/bad teams

I can imagine it just fine. I don’t see race so I don’t see what the problem is. I’m sure racists would have a problem with it though.
I personally think the slavery comments may be a little over the top, but this statement has always seemed like an odd way for one to say they're not racist (not saying you are).
If you "don't see race" then you can't see the racial inequalities that exist in society.
Black people smoke weed at the same rate as whites, yet are arrested at 4 times the rate. You need to see race to see that something's wrong there. Black people also make up over 50% of stop and frisk cases, but a color blind person would just see "people" getting wrongfully searched. And how would someone that "doesn't see race" have viewed a bus in the 1950's, where all the black people were sitting in the back?
I know I'm using hyperbole and taking the comment too literally. It is usually well intentioned. I get the person is just trying to say they treat all people they personally encounter equally. But to me it just seems like the unenlightened person's way of trying to seem enlightened.
Truly not being racist REQUIRES us to see race, and to use empathy to try to understand how other people's experiences and viewpoints might be different because of it.
This thread is a perfect example. Without seeing race and understanding our country's racial history, you would have no way of understanding certain people's objections to this idea.

It's not really like the current draft has a lot of separation from auction, if you're determined to think of it in those terms. Players draft positions get traded before or after being picked for other assets already. You already have the use of the term "owner". It's not really necessary or addressing any real racism or injustice to purposefully force a negative connotation, although some people appear trained in social degrees to do this.
While I think it was amusing to see the arguments, the "optics" can always be modified so that it doesn't trigger imagery of an auction, making the outcries seem solely intended to virtue signal - the problem seems to be there is no improvement over the current system. It's going to wreak havoc on salary cap management, so unless you're planning to redo the entire system just for this, it seems to not fit. Some teams are going to suck for decades, and when they mess up their cap in the investment of a young player that fails early, it's going to be known to everyone. The current semi-random system generates more interest and hope for bad teams, somewhat.

So just because someone can see similarities between slavery and an auction where rich, white men are literally bidding money on (majority) black athletes... that makes someone a racist? Not following that logic at all.
I don't think the op/idea is racist at all, but it's still a very similar setup to slavery auctions. It won't happen.

This is absolutely the most (Please Use More Appropriate Word) thing I've ever read on this board. There are just as many white guys running around the NFL combine that aren't QB's as there are blacks. So stupid. This world needs a huge plague.

This wouldn’t work for first round picks. The goal (in theory) is for bad teams to get the high end talent at the top of the draft.

Maybe I generalized too much, but the NFL is mostly black. Most QBs are white, and the highest paid with guaranteed money. And if you are a black QB, you get scrutinized more than your white counterparts, or they just want you to turn into a WR or RB. Just read the damn scouting reports on guys like Cam Newton pre-draft.
I was a part of a discussion on Facebook that a black friend started about this exact thing. How he felt uncomfortable watching the NFL combine, and gave him slave auction vibes. Literally every white person said that was a bunch of bull****, and every black and minority agreed with my black friend, which included me. If you aren't a minority, and especially if you aren't black, you don't understand certain situations. We also brought up the kneeling, and how our own president called them sons of bitches. So when white people say stuff like "shut up and dribble", it just sounds like "just dance for me negro".
95% of the time I get pulled over, I get asked if I have weapons or drugs, or if I own my car. EVERY damn time. No hyperbole. I've asked my white friends if they've been asked that before, and they say never.
And please, that is so far from the truth that there are just as many white guys as black guys in the NFL combine. C'mon bro.
