Right now I cant say I'd pick any player above him if I had a choice of any player.

Because I think it is too early to draw any conclusions about his play. Doncic is a special player and a special talent, but we have seen players get incredibly hot in the past. There’s a difference between being the MVP or being the best player in the league. We are yet to see whether his current level is the norm, or whether everything is going his way right now. His rookie season would indicate the latter, but we can’t say that with complete certainty. Furthermore, being or becoming the #1 in the league is a matter of consistency over a long period. 15 games is not that. James, Leonard, Harden, Curry, Durant, Antetokounmpo have done it day in, day out for two, three, four or even more years. And lastly, the inevitable postseason. Being the best player to me means elevating your own play as well as your teammates’ play on the highest stage with the most pressure. We are yet to determine whether he can do that. Doncic is great and well on his way, but there’s a lot of questions to be answered.

By the way, let me ask you this: would you consider Dwyane Wade, who was off the charts that year, the best player in the league in 2009?

Dwight triumphed over LeBron with roughly similar level of support.
Dirk beat LeBron with what should have been an inferior team.
Duncan swept LeBron and then beat him again in his dotage.
Curry knocked LeBron off with a bunch of ingenues and then with KD showed everyone what a true superteam looks like.

LeBron has been definitively beaten any number of ways and what victories he has had weren't that convincing, but his partisans keep pretending otherwise.

Luka is an absolute mythic beast, no doubt, but there's more to being the best in the game than averages.

You mean like being top 5 in most major offensive categories and leading the Mavs to fifth place in the west on an at best mediocre roster so far with a struggling co-star? That kind of "more"?
If you're asking me who the Mavs best player is, I'd say Luka. A guy like Delon Wright probably rivals his impact though at this stage in his career. KP may as well if he gets his **** together.

He's #1 in MVP tracker. This is before the 11/23 games are counted, though:
https://www.basketball-reference.com/friv/mvp.html

Doncic = 25.6% chance to win MVP
Giannis = 24.7%
LeBron = 23.9%
Harden = 15.7%

There's plenty of hype, for sure. But I'll say this -- if you are a fan of the league and have access to games, you should be watching this guy every game. If you're not watching him, you're missing out and you can't really "get" how good he is doing if you don't see it game in and game out.

I've seen every Mavs game this year (they're not really my team but I have league access pass) and have been watching the league for about 40 years. This guy is on the absolute top level, talent and skill wise, of all time. He is.

That doesn't mean he won't get hurt at some point in his career (career altering injury) or that he'll stay on the current roll he's on or anything. But you're only going to see a talent like this maybe every 15-20 years. Definitely urge people to watch him play to understand the hype.

Amazing indeed. They have very balanced out roster though(outside of Don)...balanced out of sh€&. Evene unicorn has been balanced out by that shi.. roster this season, so more impressive to me.
Luka Doncic life matters too. No to racism!

And Lebron is still a much better player than Dwight, Dirk, Duncan, Curry, and Durant. Duncan is close but Lebron is on another level compared to the others.

LeBron's individual production masks that he isn't on par with the great team players. He has consistently been underwhelming relative to the status ascribed to him. He benefits from people believing him what they think he should be rather than what he is.

Pure stupidity given how he performed overseas at such a young age, and the way the league had moved.

Indeed. Objectively speaking I don't think a player could have done better in the American college system. Which player in history had a superior pre-NBA résumé?

Probably Bill Russell, maybe Kareem but that's tougher because he didn't play in the Olympics.

Of course, I don't mention guys who came into the league late. Otherwise guys like Petrovic, Sabonis, Navarro and others have clearly better resumes than him.

Were MJ and Kobe great ‘team’ players?
Stupid argument when the guy is leading the league in assists in his 17th season and is one of the best passers, team mates, leaders to ever play the game. Along with raising the floor of his team, leading by example and involving team mates.

Russell was also the leader of Olympic champions in an era when USA didn't play professional players in national tournaments. He completely dominated pros from all around the world and he didn't have great supporting cast at all.

Kareem shouldn't likely be there, I agree with you there.

Yeah since an unathletic white euro is scoring 30 PPG, obviously that means there is no defense anymore in NBA. :lol:

1. On what metric is Harden better on O than Luka? Luka has a better eFG%, same TS%, better OBPM, better ORtg, and his team is the number one ranked offense.

2. Luka isn't a "bad" defender. He has a 105 DRtg, 2.3 DBPM. Harden, for example, is at 108 DRtg and -.7 DBPM...

1. Small sample size. Harden has been the best offensive player for some time now. I'll wait a season or two before revisiting this.

2. I've seen opposing coaches look to attack him and with success. Also why are you trying to make your case by comparing him to another bad defender in harden? These guys need to put up historic numbers to have a strong case because they're not 2-way players like giannis and bron (when he wants to defend).
