Kurt Deetz, a former pilot for Island Express Helicopters who used to fly Bryant in the chopper, said weather conditions were poor in Van Nuys on Sunday morning — “not good at all.”

The crash was more likely caused by bad weather than engine or mechanical issues, he said. “The likelihood of a catastrophic twin engine failure on that aircraft — it just doesn’t happen,” he said.

Judging from a public record of the flight path and the wide debris field, Deetz said that it appears the helicopter was traveling very fast at the time of impact, about 160 mph. After a 40-minute flight, Deetz added, the craft would have had about 800 pounds of fuel on board. “That’s enough to start a pretty big fire,” he said.

Yea... I heard that a little while ago and it just makes it even worse. It's one thing to have a freak mechanical failure.

But if the accident happened because the helicopter probably shouldn't have been flying in poor visibility, it just is so needless. I read that the local police had even grounded their own helicopters due to low visibility.

Even though at his peak he was obviously amazing, I always got the sense that he isn’t content or happy with his life. It was only up until his final year where I truly felt he was happy in life. Obviously I don’t personally know him but that’s the feeling I got, and it’s truly saddening to see him go at such a young age. Kobe could become the CEO of a multi billion dollar company one day and I wouldn’t be surprised, that’s how much respect I have for the guy.

I think Kobe was just very good at compartmentalizing and laser focus. When basketball was done it was done and if he focused his energy on something else he wanted to be the best at it in his next chapter. Some people are just wired an entirely different way and will have succeeded at anything they tried. They enjoy the process and effort it takes.

Yes, he's the kind of guy who would have succeeded at anything. A tragic loss to his family, but the world was robbed of his potential also.

I was very much looking forward to seeing all he would succeed at. He is my favorite athlete ever for more reasons than just his play on the court (which was a sight to behold itself, in my opinion he has the best highlight reel ever) he was very inspiring with his dedication, work ethic, and ambition. He was already on his way to doing big things and could have made huge contributions to the world beyond what he already did. He was an amazing human being in that way, unique.

I went to LA for the first time back in 2011 summer when I was still living in Europe. Well if you go to LA and are a basketball fan, you go to Staples. We bought 2 tickets for game 1 vs Mavs, my then girlfriend bought a Kobe 24 jersey as a bandwagon fan. I told her let's watch the Lakers give a beatdown on the Mavs because "that Kobe dude is pretty good at doing 3 peats like Jordan" and "that KFC coach is pretty good at 3 peats too". Now we all know the game went completely the other way and my wife never trusted my basketball knowledge again

Now I will always cherish that 24 jersey, and hopefully when one of his other daughters make it one day, I can proudly say hey I got a Kobe jersey from 2011.

I should preface by saying I’m not a pilot or expert of any kind, but the site I saw the data does a great job of compiling flight data in easy to understand charts

If it’s of any consolation, it would appear that death was instant. A few posters in the other thread mentioned replaying the horrible thought in their mind of Kobe trying to keep Gigi calm as they spiralled out of control.

The “pings” on satellite were twice per second which will give a pretty accurate picture of what occurred up until the time of the impact. The data shows that the impact happened at high speed and a fairly constant altitude, which combined with the reported extremely poor visibility would suggest that the helicopter didn’t drop from the sky, but the pilot just straight up ran into a mountain

She had mentioned the Knicks earlier, and this is probably the first time she's talked about basketball on the air. I wish people would grow up and stop derailing with this absolute garbage.

If you think about it, Kobe was the ONLY NBA player that was given a farewell tribute from each NBA team in his final year, for his final game in each team's arena. Who'd have thought that those farewell tributes would mean much much more now, more than ever?

Still all these hours later I'm stunned. Absolutely heartbreaking news.. especially since his daughter Gigi and another young girl were involved. Kobe was one of the my childhood heroes..a huge reason I am a basketball fan. This **** sucks and hit me harder than most celeb deaths. This hurts
