Seed by regular season record the prior year, and split into groups.
6 groups, each with a division winner, second place, third place, fourth place, and fifth place from prior year. You are never in the same group as a division rival.
EX:
Group A
#1 Miami
#2 Chicago
#3 Minnesota
#4 Lakers
#5 Knicks
Group B
#1 Utah
#2 GWS
#3 Cleveland
#4 San Antonio
#5 Orlando
And so on.
You play every team in your conference 2x. One home, one away. THESE COUNT AS REGULAR SEASON GAMES AND ARE PART OF THE 82 GAME SCHEDULE AND COUNT TOWARDS YOUR W/L RECORD
The bottom 2 teams from each group are eliminated. The top team gets a first round bye.
Double elimination tourney with a losers bracket.
Making the tourney gets you a point. Winning your group gets you 3 points.
Then once in the tourney, each round you advance gets you a point. So winning it all (I think there would be 4 rounds?) gets you +4 points. So a team that wins their group + the tourney gets +7 points.
At end of the season these count towards seeding. So a team that goes 52-30 but won the Mid-Season Tourney would get seeded as if they were a 59 win team
For this to work it NEEDS to matter for playoff seeding or else no players will care. Also give every player a $100K bonus per playoff round they advance in.
I think it would be fun.
Mid-season tournament being discussed...how can we make it worth it for everyone.
