Why? They’re in the news business, and the death of an all-time legend is undoubtedly news.

The idea of trying to beat someone else to report a death so that you can profit by getting more clicks seems pretty tasteless.

A resourceful voice who spoke of good wisdom to players who played well after his time in the league.

His playing career was before my time, but I still am blessed and grateful to have gotten to play as this guy in the many video games that's come along throughout my life time, and grateful to have been able to see him at just about all the big NBA events sitting there like the king he was. Hearing all the stories he'd tell on specials year after year whenever he was asked to do so, and hearing the stories told about him from many other all time greats as well. Rest in Peace to you sir.

He stood up for what was right at a time when it endangered his livelihood and his life. This is what his daughter said about growing up with the greatest winner in the history of team sports.



As great a basketball player as Bill Russell was, he was a better man. He lived in a time of racism and ugliness that is still too much with us today. He could have been consumed by anger and hatred, and instead continued to be an activist and ambassador for the league, and for upstanding people. The basketball legacy is staggering; the human one, like I said, is even bigger.

Bill Russell was and is a giant. And it has nothing to do with being tall.

While Russell's impact on the league and on society is unmistakable, I wish more of the articles about his passing celebrated him as a player. Russell was good. Really damn good. Has a strong argument as the greatest/best player in the history of the sport. He shouldn't be treated as strictly a pioneer, but as a legendary player.
