what happened to this thread. nice to know that "cooked" players can still put up 41 points in a game.

1 throwback game against the 2nd worst team in the league does not absolve 1/5 of the season of sucking.
The Greatest of All Time debate in basketball is essentially who has the greatest basketball resume of the player who has the best highlights instead of who is the best player

2016 Cavaliers won a championship with a roster full of bad contracts...

Again, stop. Before the previous game, Klay only scored 20 points once all season. He never shot above 50% from the field. He just did that in back to back games.
No one's saying he's "back" per say, but once again, the signs of improvement are clearly there. There's very good reason to believe that he's starting to find his shot again.

His defense is still cooked even in the 41 point game.

This is a wild take. Almost every title winning team had some overpaid players.
You could argue Marc Gasol, Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka were all bad contracts in a vacuum. However they were still good players and the Raptors won the title.
Warriors don't need Klay to be worth the max, those days are likely behind him. They just need him to be a positive player.

They can put up over 60 even after being cooked for years.

Seems like a lot of people have no idea about him. He was never a world beater by himself. This isn’t that far off from him at his best. His defense has slipped a notch but offensively he’s always been limited and had stretches of poor play. His true value is that in the playoffs in the biggest games and biggest moments he’s delivered time and time and time again. If you’re judging Klay based on the regular season that’s a bad take. The Warriors need Jordan Poole, Kuminga etc to step up but really they just need Klay to stay healthy and be ready for the playoffs. His 30 mpg then with his ability to spread out the floor to combine it with Steph is flat out deadly. Amazingly Steph has become a better defender while Klay has become worse due to injuries.

He was valuable in the finals at least both defensively and offensively last season. I don’t see why he can’t get back to that level, he apparently had a very limited off season.

Re: So how much longer til we admit Klay is cooked?
Warriors Analyst wrote:For those who haven't been watching, what made a big difference in Klay's last two games was his shot selection. For pretty much every previous game this season, Klay was trying to shoot his into a rhythm at pretty much any opportunity. Klay took pull-up threes, early shot-clock threes, transition threes in motion, pretty much anything and with no apparent regard for what was and was not a good shot.
There was apparently a conversation between Draymond, Klay, and the rest of the team that was something of a come to Jesus moment. Since then, Klay has mostly taken good shots and only taken risky ones when he's already hot, like he did in the fourth quarter. What's been particularly encouraging is that Klay has been passing up shots he would have been taking a few weeks ago in order to keep the ball moving. The first few minutes of the Warriors' game against the Knicks were super encouraging because he had a few looks coming off of pin-downs where he went up as if to fire the shot and brought defenders with him, only to pass the ball to Looney or Draymond cutting to the hoop, who would, in turn, kick the ball out to guys on the perimeter and get the ball hopping.
Klay's defensive effort and attention has been a lot better as well, especially off-ball. I think both of those things -- shot selection and defensive awareness -- are sustainable. I think Klay's conditioning has been getting better as well. He's not going to play back-to-backs this season, according to Steve Kerr. So I while I expect that his relatively advanced age will condemn him to inconsistency in the latter years of his career, I do think he can find a much high baseline for performance if he just... doesn't take dumb shots and makes an effort to be alert when he's defending off-ball.
Klay will always be a threat to score 30+ in the flow of the offense when the ball is moving. That won't be the norm and I never expect Klay of the 2019 Finals -- the dude who was running high PNR's and going ISO at the top of the key against an incredible Raptors defense -- to ever come back, but he can be one of the most deadly play finishers in basketball for the rest of his career if he wants to be.
Really nice post.
What scared me and many others most was that Klay was not playing within the offense, he was playing selfishly. He was not playing Warriors unselfish basketball and it was starting to hurt the team. The "team meeting" that has been discussed looks to have been a turning point. Really proud of Klay to realize his struggles were his own doing and that he needed to get back to putting the team first, and then his success would come.
Hopefully he gets some pep in his step from scoring better, as I'm still a little concerned about his defense vs. elite guards... but hey, supposedly in year 2 of returning from big injuries there is sometimes better ability than in year 1. I'm going to extend belief to him for now as he's really focused and listening to teammates.
Part of why I was recommending swapping JP into the starting lineup was how clear it was that the ball movement was far better when JP was playing; now the ball movement looks great again with Klay, so that part is covered. I'm still concerned that Poole is on an island with the 2nd unit though. Get Poole some help if he's going to be coming off the bench all year, he's a SG in this system with slightly better ball handling than Klay, but he is not a primary ball handler. The 2nd unit has kind of a funky mix of players that don't seem to be connecting that well on offense.
As long as Klay keeps up the Warrior Way on offense he'll be fine, even if he hits a slump.

Re: So how much longer til we admit Klay is cooked?
Klay has been slowly warming himself back up. He is now the #7 in 3pt percentage amongst players with 5+ attempts, at 38.9%.
His teammate Curry is #2 at 44.5% and Wiggins at 43.8%
Last 5 games he's been scoring 23.6 pts on 49/51/86. His season TS% is still **** though because he chucked so many bad 2pts during the beginning of the season. Definitely trending towards the right direction though.

4-17 with 4 tos tnight ouch. It’s really different without Steph out there. Dray couldn’t even suit up that bum.
