I'm jumping into this thread on Page 66 or so, but anyhow:
-- Athletes may be more conscious of mortality than a typical young person is.
-- Beyond that, I bet a lot of them grew up literally fantasizing about being Kobe or Jordan or whoever.
-- Great player. Detailed rankings of that greatness don't matter at the moment.
Redacted
-- The start on his post-playing career was impressive, and I say that as somebody who suspects that what he said about basketball was often incorrect.
-- Come to think of it, the three great Lakers guards who are in the GOAT-rankings discussions as players could be viewed as in the GOAT-ranking discussions for post-playing careers too. West is super-high in the executive GOAT rankings; the only ex-player who comes remotely close is Riley. Magic had a lot of business success, which shouldn't obscure his exec and talk show failures. And Kobe, while he wouldn't really rank all that high because he didn't live long enough, was off to a very impressive start.

I don't think you meant any harm with this post, but let's leave discussions of Kobe's past indiscretions out of this thread. Everyone makes mistakes.

As a lifelong Suns fan, I've always despised the Lakers. As expected. However, you can't help but respect Kobe the player. The man was always determined and on a mission. He never lost focus or passion, through the good seasons and the bad.

Hearing the news this morning I didn't really believe it. Started following all the media nonsense and this thread. And I found myself with tears in my eyes for the last few hours. The thought of this man finally being able to enjoy life and other passions, spend time with his family and friends, coach and teach Gianna, etc and to have it all taken in a blink. And the thought of his daughter, and her teammates/their parents in there is just terrible. The thought of these parents embracing their terrified daughters in those finals seconds is just unfathomable.

RIP to all the victims of this accident

That's badass. I don't believe in the 'eerie' stuff, but phenomena like this give me a little surge of 'what if?'

Of course so many emotions hearing the news first break but I just completely lost it when hearing Gigi was a passenger too. I can't imagine how hard things are for Vanessa right now losing her husband and baby girl. I can't imagine what everyone on the flight were going through in the last moments of their lives. Incredibly sad for everyone involved. RIP to them all.

Just a few hours ago I was in bed watching Game of Thrones on a sunday morning, and then the text that rocked my world came in. I cried during Magic's HIV announcement, but I was just a child and he lived on to do great things. This is like someone flipping a light switch off and I'm sitting in the dark.

I've been on this forum a long time arguing against Kobe's haters but seeing the tributes from everyone has been touching. Small gestures mean a lot at a time like this. I'm going to go drive to my parents house when I sober up and just give them a hug and tell them I love them. Kobe lived a legendary life but Gianna was just a child. Ugh...This season means nothing to me now. This is going to hurt for a long long time.

Please please please don’t drive drunk. I know you are in a lot of pain right now, and it’s totally understandable to want to be around loved ones. But please please please be safe.

Good advice. If you're having a drink just use an uber. Things go bad and you're putting the same pain you're experiencing now on your family or others.

Appreciate the advice and I understand the need to remind people in this day and age. But, I've always been a responsible drinker. I'm not planning to go for a few hours. I'll be sober by then. Thanks for the concern. There's more reason to worry about Lamar Odom if you saw his IG. I hope he has the support he needs.

My god, that is such a tragedy
At least, Kobe lived 41 years and had a great life and still that's obviously way too young to go away but what about his 13 years old daughter??!!
Why her, what did she **** do to deserve this??
Even though I believe in God, things like this really make you doubt sometimes...

Sorry bro. I am in shock too.

But remember Kobe would want you to live on by making smart decisions and getting the most out of your life, just like he was!

Not saying you won't, but I'm just saying.

I'm going to remember Kobe by being more disciplined and working harder. I think that's what he would want!

I believe we will see him again. Hoops in heaven. Stay up!
