Tatum crying his eyes out during the national anthem after the moment of silence was AWFUL.

I'm jumping into this thread on Page 66 or so, but anyhow:
-- Athletes may be more conscious of mortality than a typical young person is.
-- Beyond that, I bet a lot of them grew up literally fantasizing about being Kobe or Jordan or whoever.
-- Great player. Detailed rankings of that greatness don't matter at the moment.
-- There were several well-known apparent blemishes on Kobe's personality/character, most visibly reflected in the Shaq arguments and the rape allegation -- but not a lot of others that I'm aware of. Rape allegation aside, he was a highly competitive, highly confident player who sometimes toook those traits to excess.
-- The rape allegation to me was in that middle area where it seemed the woman had genuine trouble deciding whether or not it was consensual. It's hard to judge such situations with accuracy from afar, so we wind up goint to the test: "Is there a pattern of such allegations against the man?" And to my knowledge there wasn't.
-- When it comes to international matters, relating to people of different countries who speak different languages. etc. -- I tend to think of Kobe as a "class act" before I remember the blemishes above, so let's just say he was very admirable in those areas.
-- The start on his post-playing career was impressive, and I say that as somebody who suspects that what he said about basketball was often incorrect.
-- Come to think of it, the three great Lakers guards who are in the GOAT-rankings discussions as players could be viewed as in the GOAT-ranking discussions for post-playing careers too. West is super-high in the executive GOAT rankings; the only ex-player who comes remotely close is Riley. Magic had a lot of business success, which shouldn't obscure his exec and talk show failures. And Kobe, while he wouldn't really rank all that high because he didn't live long enough, was off to a very impressive start.

Absolutely gutted by this news. I never cheered for Kobe but I always respected the mans game and love for the game. My heart goes out to Vanessa, their children and the families of the other victims. Never take your life or the lives of your loved ones for granted. Tomorrow is never promised.
