Random rant that's unrelated to this thread:

The majority of the 'racist' people I've encountered before are uneducated twats who need a scapegoat for losing their jobs to a minority.

America is a beautiful place where people from all walks of life have an opportunity to succeed. The downside of that, though, is that you'll always have morons who just can't accept other people as children of God or as equals; since this person looks different, or has a different skin color, or a different sexual orientation, or talks funny, etc. they must clearly be inferior..that's the mindset of some of these people.

It's just a sad reality of life that there will always be morons like that in this country. It's something we must all accept. I'm not upset at what ESPN posted; I can laugh at the fact that Jeremy Lin will probably make more money in his lifetime than that idiot journalist could ever dream of making. I doubt he (Lin) cares, as should any of you.

It's obviously a attention grab by espn, they wanted people talking about it and the hits they got by people checking it out. It's a phrase that has been used before but espn can't be that stupid that they didn't see that people would take offense to that.

Blacks, gays, Jews, and now even the Chinese - multiculturalism is destroying our freedom of speech, it is sad. In a democracy, now the minority has the power instead of the majority, it's just not right.

Don't worry my friend, as us humans are starting to become more and more educated with each passing generation across the globe, racism and religion will have lesser and lesser impact on people's ideologies. No longer will we have to accommodate ignorance and superstitions into our functioning as a society causing a major block on rational, scientific and practical ideas to fix our immediate problems and prepare for future ones.

Race doesnt matter. People are people. You shouldnt be angry that minorities have an upper hand if you think that is the case. Because we are all people. Look at everyone as people and not as a group seperated by their skin color and there will be less things to be angry about which don't really matter.

This debate has never been about 'can this be construed as offensive?'

Of course it can. That's why when the error was noticed it was taken down, and an apology was made - ESPN is not in the business of offending people.

The question is (and always had been) 'was this an intentional racist slur, or did somebody just eff up?'

And to that, I think the evidence strongly points to it being a f*ck up. You're free to disagree though.

I think this post nails it. It was likely an error, but we cannot know for sure. As such, it certainly should be removed with an apology, especially considering ESPN headlines are usually a pun about the player/team depicted. Given that there are millions of possible headlines to use, it is obvious that we should avoid using headlines that are offensive. Why be so sensitive? Because some people are offended. Sure you can go through life and just yell back at people "Stop being so sensitive" or we could just not post offensive stuff, use and support headlines that aren't offensive, and there would be no problem.

It's like racist jokes, if you are actually a funny and creative person you realize there is no need to use them. I used them A LOT from when I was 16-26ish but now at 29 I think I grew out of liking to argue with people for the sake of argument (like a lot of people in this thread) and instead I like to concentrate on jokes that anyone can find funny.

Not sure if this point was made yet, but I would just like the say that writers, especially professional writers, are very specific with their diction. Almost everything a professional writer writes is deliberate. They are paid well to understand their audience, to understand their language and to understand the culture around their subject. Basically, I believe this was intentional, but let's not blow it up to epic proportions. This was some idiot at ESPN who thought they were being cute, but simply failed at doing so.

Racism police need to stop. We have a black president. The majority of America is NOT racist. Bring back Monday Night Football song. I don't care if everyone is politically correct.

These are the worst jokes in my opinion. Non-offensive, easy to understand, clean... they're the "Disney" of jokes.

A good joke SHOULD be offensive. It should challenge the audience's intellect and take people out of their comfort zone. In truth, there's nothing more pathetic for a comedian to do than subvert himself for the sake of having more people like him.

I mean, we all saw what happened to Bill Cosby.

But look at some of the other guys... Richard Pryor, Sam Kinison, Robert Schimmel, Dave Chapelle, that Japanese comedian I like but can't name because they all look alike... you know, the one with slanty eyes...

All of these comics are brilliant BECAUSE they don't "play it safe". They're willing to take chances and are all the more hilarious for it.

Don't like to talk politics with random people that might get mad, but that was a major logical fallacy. That's like saying "we freed the slaves we're not racist" as far as fallacies go.

You guys saw that ESPN headline last year:
Stoudamire tells Heat go fly a ****.

i actually remember ESPN had a headline that said "Nyjer Please!" for about 2 minutes last year. I had a picture of it but I forget what happened to it. not a lot of people saw it and almost everything is taken down about it now. I think they just tried to get that one swept under the rug because it was up so shortly

Agreed. She's the worst. The "Ann Coulter" of comedy.
