It's the Lakers (again), but Ricky Rubio just set a new career-high in points.

Over the last 27 games

15/10/4/2 57% TS, 42% from 3 (35/84)

After hitting those 3s in the first half tonight guys were running him off the 3 point line and he dribbled into two straight midrange jumpers. Just awesome to see and I hope he's really turned a corner. He's so much more decisive looking to score.

I think Ricky Rubio is the perfect PG for the Wolves. Just a totally elite passer and plus defender surrounded with a team that has huge potential to be an offensive juggernaut. Hope he can keep working his off-ball skills and shooting for him to become much more versatile as a player.

The number one factor -- Confidence. Shooting was always a mental thing with Ricky.

Other factors..he is healthy. He hurt his shooting elbow in the beginning of the season, and he's never really been healthy for any great stretch of time in his career.

Thibs trusts him, and is running the offense through him instead of through Lavine and Wiggins

They have a new shooting coach in Minnesota who used to be a disciple of Chip in San Antonio. I haven't read anything specific about his work with Rubio, but I wonder if that's a big part of it.

From what I've seen of Rubio I think there are a couple of factors in his scoring breakout over the past 25+ games. First, his jump shot has been gradually improving for quite a while in terms of form. His jump shot today is totally different than it was a few years ago in a good way. Second, in the last month or two he started looking to take his own shot as a first option which is something he almost never used to do. In the past even when open he would hesitate before shooting while now he pulls the trigger in rhythm. I think the combination of improved form and taking shots in rhythm are the biggest reasons why he is shooting so well.

It's the change in the offense. I suspect (as Twolves fans have stated) that Thibodeau was playing isoball earlier in the season and trying to force-feed Wiggins to get him acquainted with one-on-one situations. Lavine also did a fair bit of handling the ball, and Rubio was relegated to spotting up in the corner, which isn't his strength at all. I think Thibodeau wanted to see what everyone in his team can do outside of their comfort zone, but I couldn't be too sure.

I don't think it's out of line to say LaVine's injury is helping Rubio's volume, but, strangely I think the change happened after Rubio returned to the team from his grandmother's funeral. Look at these before/after numbers going into tonight:

Before (38 games): 7.7 ppg (37.1% FG, 24.1% 3FG, 87.7% FT), 8.0 apg
After (29 games): 14.2 ppg (43.6% FG, 38.1% 3FG, 89.6% FT), 10.2 apg

That is since January 24, which was 6 games before LaVine left the lineup. So let's look at those six games with the both of them:

Rubio: 14.0 ppg (45.0% FG, 47.6% 3FG, 83.3% FT), 9.3 apg
LaVine: 15.5 ppg (44.2% FG, 24.2% 3FG)

Was Rubio picking up his game because LaVine was struggling? Or was Rubio's play causing a step back in production from Rubio? I guess we don't really know for certain, but I think it was Rubio's improvement/inspired play that caused the change.

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad that Rubio is putting it together for you guys, you've got a bright future with that young core.

Since the All-Star break Rubio is shooting 46/44/91. These are Steph Curry MVP numbers.

He's very good. Was getting annoyed with all the comments in the media (Arnovitz especially) about how they should just shelve him and start Dunn because he's younger.

I think something changed in his head after all the tragedy that he had to endure about his family... and then all the trade talk. Hes just playing with anger.

I mean, historically he hasn't been able to score well at all, and a huge reason why he's been markedly better recently is because he's been scoring at a good rate.

He's been a significant positive for years now, even when he wasn't scoring like he has been recently.

He's been positive enough to be a league average PG, maybe slightly above at a deep PG position, that's pretty impressive. His inability to score effectively held him back until recently though as he's suddenly become a good scorer, at least for now. With scoring we always have to wait for a larger sample size to see how real something is.
