If a team drafts him they can keep his rights until he goes a full year without playing professionally anywhere in the world.

People can act like this is no big deal, and may be it isn't but Fran Vasquez never did come over, and I am sure teams are going to look really hard into this. Maybe its nothing, but I am sure they will check into it.

He has this threat in the back of his pocket. Good for him. He won’t come over unless it’s the right city/team

He could withdraw before June 11 and come back in next year. If he stays in past the 11th, he's in this year, and the team that drafts him would own his rights even if he stays in Europe.

I think the Magic still own the rights to Fran Vasquez LOL.

So they own your rights until you play out your contract or die?

Luka is coming to the NBA next season and he will play for whatever franchise selects him. That could be Suns, Kings, Hawks, Grizz etc.

It may not be the city. It could be that the Kings have a PG and SG for the future already and their back court is crowded. Where do you see Doncic playing?

You know, I felt the same way when the Celtics drafted Larry Bird in 1978. The forward positions were so crowded: Cedric Maxwell, Curtis Rowe, Billy Knight and Marvin Barnes, just to name 4. I guess they should have taken a guard like Reggie Theus or Ron Brewer instead.

Negotiating for what? Rookie contracts are pretty much slotted with each draft pick.

Yeah - the lower he goes in the draft, the less money he makes.

No because if he stays for 3-4 years he can sign as a free agent just like Bogdan did.

How many years does he have in so far?

From when he is drafted. Not sure if it’s 3 or 4.

If Real Madrid offers him enough money, it could make sense for him to stay another 3 years in Spain. Being trapped for 7 or 8 years in a dumpster fire franchise like the Kings is just not really attractive. The Suns are going with Ayton, so the Kings,Hawks and Grizzlies are his possible destinations. Maybe he should take Bogdanovics route.

Larry Bird would be what I call a special case. I wouldn't put Doncic on that level unless he shows something in workouts and interviews. So far, I got him rated as future Euro All-Star.

The draft is usually a crap shoot. You could've got this guy.

What does it mean for his draft position? Does he still go in the top 5? A team looking to tank for another season would not hesitate to take a special talent like Luka even if he doesn't play next season. Thoughts?

why would he say tgat he is leaving a day before themost important game of the season? He is not worried about draft and his stock, all he cares for is winning.
He is not like your typical ncaa prospects who dont really care bout winning

They don't have their pick next year...Boston/Philly does.

I'm just hoping it's a move to force his way down to 9 haha

I'm pretty torn on this, on one hand I'm happy with the top 9 guys in the draft landing in NY taking one guy out of that picture drops us to the next tier of projected talent. On the other hand, I'm projecting the Knicks are going to have a pretty bleak season that includes many losses and if Doncic declares next year instead I think we'd have a much better chance of getting him.

KP is rehabbing in Spain with Real Madrid and his boy Luca....he won't be back until late next year.....lotto happens...Luka says no thanks, maybe next year.....

You’d think if he really wanted to pick his franchise he would just wait until he can do the FA thing instead of declaring for the draft then - I mean, he has to understand how the draft works and had a really good idea who would be picking at the top... The only somewhat surprise is Sacramento being high, but are they really any worse than Memphis (who should have had the #2 spot by odds). I mean what “big market” destination had a legit shot at a top 2 pick? Dallas? - I don’t really see them as a “shoe-selling” franchise... I just don’t think he declared like that hoping for the right team to win the lottery...

He is not staying. He was given interview one day before final 4, what did you expected him to say - yes I am definitely leaving... This is not a hint, this is just a diplomatic cliche answer that he is focusing on Real Madrid goals right now.

as a euro basketball fan, i have to say that in here players are more responsible to their clubs comparing to nba players. so just the day before final 4 he had to keep real madrid fans alive. real madrid is a huge sports club as you know.

also i see that luka is a very ambitious, competitive boy. multiple times he cried in the court when he lose. i am saying it in not a negative way. he is mentally strong than his age, but he eants to win every game. maybe he looks to bogdan who is such a greater player than he is now in sacramento, and fearing about losing so much in there.

drafting doncic is a hard thing because you have to give him ball and responsibility much often for a rookie. a team who thinks that playing him for less than 20 minutes as a smaller role player will be fail to earn him as a star.

Personally I don't really care for Doncic but would be good to see the Knicks go forward with these 2 guys

Incredible, absolutely incredible, that a bit of fake news spread like fire and as a consequence 8 pages have also been posted on the topic on RealGM... He's been saying the same all season, he has all the time remained 100% committed to Real, so these quotes were taken completely out of context.

For what it's worth, he talked about Kokoškov for one of the Slovenian news stations, and how he'd love to work with him again, that they are still in touch on a weekly basis, and that he has no doubts that Kokoskov deserved to become a head coach in the NBA and that it's not a surprise for him, knowing how good of a coach he is. Can't wait until some idiot website picks up on this quote and turns it into "Doncic will only come to the NBA if he is picked #1!" Clickbait bull.

I mean as a pro in Europe... Like how many years more would he have to stay in Europe before he can do the FA thing? (Assuming he’d withdrawal from the NBA draft)... The full whatever it is 3-4?, or does the year he just played count?
