He's never been a good 1 on 1 defender. He can't stay in front of his man. He's a better team defender. He's best with his hands in passing lanes. He takes charges well. But shutting someone down is not his speciality. The Lakers used guys like KCP and Avery Bradley for the tough stuff.
I've been watching him his entire career so I know his game inside and out.
He's not grading out well in perimeter defense this season according to Bball-Index:
The 11 regular season games I’ve watched him play for the Bulls show that he can play good 1 on 1 defense. Often on the primary ball handler and/or scorer (see defense on Harden). He’s a bull dog on defense. It’s his calling card.
