Really though, what's all that unbelievable about it? These teams generate a ton of revenue for the city and the mayor is working to get re-elected after this first term. This is how you all but secure it. Not exactly a quid-pro-quo move, but not too far of a stretch from it, either.
For the sake of illustrating that point, he raked in nearly $10M for his campaign. A good chunk of that, to the tune of $1.5M, came from the owner of the Mets. This was from TWO days ago:

Adams says he doesn’t “feel any pressure doing this job at all, because I’m going to do what’s right.”
“We’re going to do it in the right way,” Adams said, per ESPN. “We’re going to follow the science … we’re going to make the right decision. And in New York, no matter what you do, this is 8.8 million people and 30 million opinions, so you’re never going to satisfy New Yorkers, so you must go with the logic, your heart and the science.”
Guess the science changed dramatically since Tuesday.

I get that and all. The decrease is more likely attributable to COVID having become endemic and here to stay as opposed to the shorter but more vigorous pandemic. We're adapting by means of developed immunity and being smarter about things in general, but that still doesn't change the perceived notion that his motivations are anything more than monetary in nature.

This involves Kyrie who is known for his brilliant scientific mind, perhaps they were persuaded by logical arguments from him.

Re: [SHAMS] Kyrie Irving cleared for home games starting tomorrow……
Kyrie has already said he won't play
He doesn't take too kindly when rules are made in preference of your social class. He speaks for the working man and since they haven't fixed it for all people.
He will stand by his word and not play.
Because if he does suit up he was full of caca all along.

Stop being so disrespectful.

The Nets season is already hampered. They haven't home court and are in the play-in. Hell COVID will still affect Kyrie if he plays the Canadian basketball team

What he says versus what he does remains to be seen. He appears to be a man of conviction, but sitting when he could play and contribute at home, especially if that meant wins improving their seeding, would be looked upon very poorly by the fans and perhaps his teammates.
We'll see.

The local speculation is the Mets owner made this go away. The Mets supposedly have a large number of unvaccinated players, and $1.5mil in campaign donations buys a lot of influence.

You’re not wrong.
Everyone here would be cool with him besides this awful mandate hypocrisy that effects everyone from city workers, cops, firefighters, teachers, cooks, etc.
I can’t work for Madison Square Garden or Barclays without the vaccine but I can attend as a fan. I can’t work for AMC movie theatres in Brooklyn but I can attend without a mask or vaccine required. It’s political and it’s disrespectful to anyone’s intelligence. Science has nothing to do with it.
It's not political its due to litigation and what the private business has to do to comply and protect itself from lawsuits from workers. Once the business is off the hook from getting sued by employees if they get covid then they will stop caring.
Yeah but there is nobody even a 1-10 ratio that is actually suing private businesses for COVID infections.
They are legitimately limiting jobs at this point and wonder why crime is outrageous.
