People see multiple first round picks and freak out

Late firsts aren’t a big deal.

Major overpay I think, but I will take it

Agreed. They obviously wanted Smart really badly. Maybe they believe his vet presence will also be good in their lockerroom.
Smart is a pretty good player but not worth 2 FRP's in a vacuum based solely on his play.

I get that Marcus Smart is the heart and soul of the Celtics but hes also the point guard of the team that has been held back because they don't have anyone good at dribbling, passing, or making smart decisions, which is kind of a point guards job. So hes the heart and soul in both bad and good ways.

I think moving Smart was the right idea. I think Celtics won from a value standpoint but I dont love the Zingus fit.

MEM probably overpaid somewhat but those FRPs are probably not going to be of much value to the Cs.
They made it to the ECFs last year. They need players to help them win now.
KP fits a need.
I think losing Smart creates a huge void.
JT and JB really need to step up and lead this team now.
And they need a PG.
Aside from a big to serve as a scoring option which they got in KP, they need ball handlers. That was a glaring need last year.

Stop, Smart is leagues better than Brooks.

I agree with everything you said up until you said you didn't like the fit. I think if there was one team in the league he fits on its Boston. The core had run its course

They moved up from #35 to #25 tomorrow night. And got a 2024 GSW FRP protected (1-4) which is a wildcard.

Late first round picks don’t have much value.

New CBA with the salaries structured for Boston the way they are the value of these picks will probably be high.

Bit of both, he's a hothead. He is the leader of the team, but is also their greatest enemy.

Personally I think Smart needed to be their 6th man with them starting a real PG. I truly believe he was their draymond green and meant more to the team/locker room than what his stats suggest. Let's see who will fill that void.

slicedbread2 wrote:Well damn that was unexpected. My ratings for each team:

1) Boston had too many guards and Prichard wanted playing time. The recent meltdown in the playoffs indicated that major change was needed. Brad managed to shed Smart's contract(has an extra 2 years after next year) for an expiring in KP who has managed to stay healthy so far in DC and on paper will be the ideal 3rd big to fit next to Rob Williams III and allow Al to come off the bench to conserve energy for the playoffs.

Worse case scenario KP doesn't work out and you flip him at the deadline while getting the 25th pick to add a cost controlled asset(could even trade down into the 2nd round to get more young guys to fill out the roster) while having leverage in giving Brown the deal he wants(supermax minus the NTC that Beal got). Derrick White showed he could be relied on to get things done and even though Brogdon's injuries are a concern I think they'll be all right in the long run. It's sink or swim for Jaylen and Jayson. My guess is they'll send Gallo+filler(Muscala+Kornet maybe) to comply with the CBA.

Grade: B+ could be upgraded to an A depending on how the fit goes with KP.

2) Memphis needs a culture reset badly. Tyus Jones was gonna be an expiring salary and would look to get paid so they decided to recirculate salary(not a big fan of giving up 2 1sts though but whatever). Smart is a good leader although his defense regressing is bit of a concern not to mention Ja being suspended for 25 games will leave a lot of question marks as to how things will go(assuming he doesn't do more dumb crap). Brooks ain't coming back as stated by the Grizzlies and Steven Adams was annoyed by the lack of maturity in the locker room so this is a wake up call.

Grade: C+ for now. Will revisit in the future.

3) Washington honestly ended up with a far better deal than the Clippers deal would've given them(30th pick is nice but Morris is cooked). Morris Sr. would've became Chuck Morris and end the homeless crisis in D.C. by himself with his known bricklaying tendencies but they managed to get a way better asset in Tyus Jones who can be flipped by himself immediately as he's proven to be a spot-starter/capable backup pg and if the new GM is smart could potentially get multiple draft picks to aid in the rebuild provided that they eat a bad deal.

Grade: A+. Gotta give props to the new GM as he's been dealt a crap hand and hopefully Leonsis won't mess with things.

For those are are bitching about Smart, yo do realize Derrick White was named to the all defensive team this past season, right?
While also being 10x better than Smart on offense.

This trade finally unleashes him.

They couldn't have all 3 of Smart/White/Brogdon on the roster with Porzingis coming back. They started two of them last year at all times, because they went small with Brown/Tatum playing the 3/4.

Now with Porzingis on board, they will clearly revert to the old two big lineup, with Porzingis playing either with Horford or Williams...and the J's reverting back playing the 2 and 3.

You couldn't have had 3 guards at the caliber of Smart/White/Brogdon, been paid a ton and fighting for scrap minutes in the backcourt.
One had to go, they tried to trade Brogdon who is coming after an injury and might not be ready by the start of the year...no takers. They traded Smart instead.

It's still a good move. Boston won't lose **** at the PG spot.

Basically White turned into better Marcus Smart this year with better shooting and Smart's defense fell off.

White, Brown, Tatum, Porzingis, RWill is an offensive and defensive monster lineup.

I think there is more work to be done but easy W imo

Not to mention the backup PG requested a trade for a full time starting role. That pick won't touch the court for the Celtics so probably better used to trade for something else.
