There’s one thing this team is clearly missing: a speedster.

There’s one roster spot left, and I’d pick Fox.

Lack of elite speed and agility at the guard position is what gives the rest of the world a chance when comprising these rosters. The world has a shot when Team USA continues to not send that sort of player. I think that they heavily favor pick and roll defense and spot up shooting at that position. Fox and Donovan Mitchell would be additions that would give Team USA an overpowering speed/athleticism advantage.

Not just a shot, sometimes they get an advantage. It’s how you get guys like Dennis Schroder shredding us. We’re putting almost all defensive guard hopes on Jrue Holiday - playing after yet another long, long playoff run. There’s Ant too, but not sure he’s the best to chase PGs.

They will be fine with biid, AD and bam protecting the rim. Plus if they really need perimeter D, tatum, kawhi, and jrue can be deployed

USA select makes me feel like a casual. A number of guys I have no idea who they are.

I see PP, Amen, Flagg, Podz, JJJ, Keegan. But then there’s probably about 4 dudes who are just complete :dontknow:

Of course I’m not all that surprised because I saw a couple names I didn’t recognize when the roster was released.

Is it me, or is this another anecdotal indication that the US talent pool is weakening?

Yeah, same for me. There are a number where I def know their name, but I haven’t seen them play enough to recognize them. Like Galloway, TJD. Heck even a name like Brandon Miller. I mean, obviously well familiar with pedigree and box score watching, but don’t make it a habit to catch the Hornets.

I hope this entire story turns into a dumpster fire after USA fails to win 8-) . Would be a must see tv to see all of the excuses they would spew after. My bet is on LeBron to push the rest of the team under the bus if they fail

No excuse, I think they have a good chance to do so. I am not unrealistic, as they are the favorites to win it all. This is just a little speculation on my side here, wondering what would happen in that case.

They have recently lost ( last WC) and I am wondering how will they do in this tournament. They have all the names what remains to be seen is what will they do. 8-)

Who doesn't know the legend Nigel Hayes???

Btw, he scored 50 in the Euroleague game this past season (modern Euroleague record).

Of course it isn't the same team, different players different team. I wonder how will USA play as a team with all these names. Will be a fun tournament I hope.

From a historical perspective this qualifies as a Dream Team and a few years ago I'd seriously consider it for the greatest of all-time.

But now?

Still have to be the favorites but there are a number of little things that do make the idea of an upset more than just imaginary.

The legends on the team are older and the current best players are likely on other teams.
It's FIBA international basketball rules.
This is a team of many firsts but that also means many of the guys haven't had the chance to play with each other previously and may not gel yet.
France is probably the most interesting other team and the Olympics are being held in Paris giving them extra motivation.
Current basketball is prone to more variation in play than in the past. One cold shooting game or hot shooting opponent in knockout format spells curtains.

Still to see those 3 and Kawhi on the same team is special. They defined the NBA for most of the 2010s. Harden not being there is maybe missing a little bit.

Not sure if I’d rather have Brunson than Haliburton in the international game. He wasn’t so fantastic last summer at the World Cup. Given the role he’s likely to be playing, maybe Maxey would be a better choice than Brunson. Selecting a national team shouldn’t be just picking the best 12 nba players irrespective of roles in an international game context.

Couldnt agree more. I'd pick Brunson over Hali for a NBA team, but for FIBA ball, Hali over Brunson is a no brainer to me. Short score-first guards with limited playmaking ability dont usually fare well in international play. And that team really lacks playmaking, only Lebron outside of Haliburton can handle that role. We've seen how those ISOs offenses have looked during the playoffs so far, I dont want to see that at the Olympics.

Brunson's defense at the 2023 FIBA World Cup was absolutely horrific. He couldn't guard anyone.

Galloway is an old man compared to most the select guys.

Hahaha, nice. Thanks for posting, yeah, now I remember his name from Wisconsin and watching that group’s tourney run. Wonder if Nigel and the stenographer are still together today.

Makes you wonder why these fringe guys are included over guys with strong potential to actually make a future team. Like Mobley. Guess he passed last year, but would he have again? Chet Holmgren? Get these guys continued exposure to FIBA rules.
