Personally I think we overpaid for him, but I'm not footing the bill, and accumulated talent is nothing to scoff at. I'm just happy our ownership is doing what it takes to build a champion.

The reason Varejao is a worse signing is because it IS for an extra year, with higher raises.

The 6th and final year is partially unguaranteed(a-la Jerry Stackhouse). Actually, Varejao's contract has lower raises, and starts a bit higher(~600k higher)

I also heard it was 50m, not 44.5, if you could link me to that, that'd be nice of you.

6Y/42.5M. The deal includes possible personal incentives that, if reached, could make it worth 50 million dollars(which, if he reaches, he will be worth completely). http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4315370

Gortat's also considered the higher upside player. I agree with you in principle- it is bad cash for value for the Magic. But you shouldn't care. All you should care about is that he's quite good and you'd rather he not be on the team. Just like Magic fans can think he's overpaid, but still be less than happy that he's not left.

I think it's a great signing for them. I'm just saying, you can't kill the Varejao signing while calling this an awesome signing. You can't have it both ways.

1. I don't care about the league. I don't. I have already said that Vince makes Orlando a better matchup with other teams but Hedo gave Cleveland fits last year. He averaged 7 assists per game against the Cavs from the SF position and he made other plays that lead to open looks from 3. I don't think Carter can do that against Cleveland. Carter has had his struggles against the Cavs in the past. Plus the height was a huge advantage because of the way Cleveland hedges, which makes it harder for someone like Carter to get a pass off.

2. My memory of recent history is what matters. Carter's stats in the distant past don't mean anything right now. He will be 33 and a half if the 2 teams meet in the playoffs next year. What VC did as a 26, 27, 28 year old, etc doesn't mean much right now.

3. If Orlando doesn't start Bass, they have to start Redick. Redick is poor on defense, can't create his own shot at all, and is sort of scared to play out there. I guess they could start Pietrus but that would open a whole new can of worms because then who do they have as the super-sub off the bench to guard LeBron? And if they do have Redick out there, then either he or VC would have to check LeBron. Redick can't do that so it would have to be Carter, and that takes its toll on him at the other end.

Pietrus starting would be juuuust fine. The 9 minutes a game Carter has to check LeBron, he'll just have to persevere through. Night.

With this development, are the Orlando Magic projected to be one of, if not THE highest payroll team in the league?

Fine, if you start Pietrus then they lose that X factor off the bench they had last year. Yet another casualty of Hedo leaving.

Dont Magic fans perfer keeping Turk+Lee instead of just VC? Then sign Bass and have room for gortat:

Jameer/Johnson
Lee/Redick
Turk/Pietrus
Lewis/Bass
Howard/Gortat

I think thats better than:

Jameer/Johnson
Vince/Redick
Pietrus
Lewis/Anderson/Bass
Howard/Gortat

Magic fans, prove me wrong

This is what nobody wants to talk about. I really believe they traded Lee with the idea of giving Redick more minutes, management has been on Van Gundy about giving Redick time and it showed when Redick played in some crucial times in the playoffs. If Orlando doesn't make another move, Redick will be playing major minutes and that's hard to cover up no matter who is on your team, he's just a god awful player.

This is all I'll say about the matchup thing now

If the Magic start Lewis against us, Dwight Howard won't get that freedom to roam around and wreak absolute and total havoc without worrying about defending a guy, because the only true offensive threat from the 4/5 spots from Cleveland was Z. It allowed them to disguise Lewis on him(because Z is only a threat in the post 1-2 times a game at most, and even then it's a little flip hook or fade-away finesse shot), and Dwight basically just ignored Varejao because he can only score off of a feed from LeBron. Now, Dwight won't be able to do that. It either forces them to play Bass and lose their advantage offensively to try and slow Shaq down or it forces them to lose a lot of the havoc Dwight wreaks when allowed to play similar to a goalie in soccer.

It's something the Cavs couldn't do, but sorely needed to do this past season in the playoffs.

There are so many other nuances and problems that both teams present though, that's just the tip of the iceberg for both sides. But if there is one distinct difference match-up wise, it's what I just mentioned above.

FAIL.

Thats not a Yankee logo, smart guy. And I'm from Orlando. Born and Raised. And you still haven't argued my point.

Just all kinds of failure there.

Only knock on VC is that he doesn't bring it every night. He's still a good fade away shooter and slasher with decent defense.

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: Gortat NOT to be resigned by ORL. I just saw it during an Extenz infomercial. The smiling guy who never talks held up a sign stating that ORL has declined to match Dallas' offer sheet.

In all seriousness, I'm calling BS on this once again. Upon further research, this is what I came up with from the original thread (http://orlandomagiczone.com/eve/forums/ ... 101463/p/1):

1) The OP of the original thread started the topic 1 hour and 20 minutes after the broadcast ended. Nobody else reported it during this time. I find it hard to believe that he'd want to "break the news" 80 minutes after he saw the report. To those who claim "people aren't always on their computers"- it doesn't take 80 minutes to get on the computer and for someone who posted "if you weren't a believer then, you'll be a believer now, I'm 2/2" then I'd assume he'd want to share the info as soon as he got it.

2) There are 3.5 "confirmations." Normally I wouldn't be skeptical of a few different independent confirmations but here is the information about each: The OP joined on 7/10/09 (yeah, a few days ago). The two other confirmations joined in Feb of this year one day apart from each other. Coincidental? Maybe. Multiple accounts? More likely. Oh and the .5? Someone claims his friend called him to tell him that he saw the report on TV.

3) This news was so breaking that one person claimed it interrupted a show to do it (and risk losing advertising revenue) but not put it on its site? In addition, there are NO indications ANYWHERE on the internet that this is even true. Only 3 people in all of ORL saw this?

4) The person who claimed to have watched on here was RANDOMLY flipping through channels and happened to come up to this very report? Coincidence? Perhaps. Conspiracy? More likely.

5) The OP on this thread says that he could be wrong and cites the Truman article. That was based on a prediction not a confirmation. When was Truman confirmed to be President? The newscaster confirmed that Gortat would be resigned (by all people's accounts of the situation).

What is your point? He left us because there were no minutes as well as no money. Even with those two things in mind, he was still strongly considering Dallas as a team to play for. Why so insecure?

I have a feeling you'll see a diff VC with a ring in sight and no need to carry the team offensively
