Howard was the only player with more DPOTY votes last year, and this year Howard is down and LeBron is even more impressive!

Actually you're wrong....before Artest went down the Lakers were no 1 in defensive efficiency, giving up 95.2 points/game and allowing teams to shoot 42.7% FG and 30.4% 3P

In 3 games without Artest we dropped to 3rd in defensive efficiency and we give 113 ppg on 47.4% FG and 32.8% 3P

So,it's pretty clear to me that he is the anchor of our D, and our defense was the best in the league before he went down

So,my front-runner for dpoy is Ron Artest

^But all of LA's early season dominance was a bit bogus because of the very odd scheduling, so the defensive drop could have just as much to do with having to play Cleveland (Artest played) etc.

Likewise the next time Cleveland plays a tough game will be jan 8th, so things are going to become TRUE for the first time this season!

It will really come down to individual lockdown games, like LeBron locking up Joe today in Atlanta, and that is something Artest failed (conceded 26 points 9 assists and fouled out) to do to LeBron!

Also,another fact:

Lakers with/without Artest against the 2 highest scoring teams in the league:

With:
vs Phoenix 2 games ;Phoenix score 95 ppg(they average almost 110 for the year),40.1% FG(they average 49.6 for the year) 33.3% 3P (they average 42.2% for the year)

vs Warriors:1 game:Warriors score 97 points(they average 107 for the year),39.1% FG(they average 47.6 for the year),23.5% 3P(they average 35.7 for the year)

Without
vs Phoenix 1 game:Phoenix score 118 points on 48.9 % FG and 36.4% 3P
vs Warriors 1 game:Warriors score 118 points on 55.4% FG and 40% 3P

you notice a slight difference

Artest has locked down almost everybody he's guarded....including Joe Johnson
I remember him going for 20 or so against kobe in the first 15 min of the game, then artest took the responsability and held him to 1-9 shooting for the rest off the game

Also, you can't judge a player on a single game....yes Lebron played good on JJ...that doesn't make him frontrunner to DPOY

I've been talking up DPOY from day one! Not just from Joe!

I find it hard to believe that the media will give him both MVP and DPOY

If he doesn't win MVP maybe but even then the chances are pretty slim

Only MJ and Hakeem won them both in the same year...

Mj had 3.2 steals 1.6 blocks 101 defensive rating
Hakeem had 1.6 steals 3.7 blocks defensive rating 95

LeBron might win the MVP award (although I still have Kobe out in front), but he's definitely not winning the DPoY.

James didn't play good defense for the most part of the season. He was considerable worse than last season. He picked it up again and shows more effort. That is even visible in his stats (increased rebounds, steals and blocked shots). But that is in no way enough to win the DPOY award. Someone pointed out the performance of the Lakers with Ron Artest. This is indeed very interesting. With Artest on the floor the Lakers have a DRtg of 96 (the Cavs with James are at 103). In fact no player has a better On Court DRtg than Ron Artest. The next best players on that list so far:

Erick Dampier 96.2
Anderson Varejao 96.3
Lamar Odom 97.0
Kendrick Perkins 97.7

Artest has the 3rd largest Net DRtg (difference between On Court and Off Court value). Only Anderson Varejao and Dirk Nowitzki have a better value. James has even a negative value, which means the Cavs without him on the floor have a better DRtg.

So, overall Ron Artest has a way better season in terms of defense than James. Right now I would choose him as the DPOY.

Don't let the numbers fool you, Lebron played great tonight. He took Joe Johnson out of the game and kept the Cavs offense flowing pretty nicely.

Anyway, I'm sure this recent uptick in Kobe's minutes is a result of Ron AND Luke being out, once we get our SFs back he'll fall back to 37-38mpg

You'll never see a Cavs fan say something like that when Kobe has a bad shooting night. That type of honesty is refreshing.

...

Agreed on Ron Artest. He has been fantastic defensively. It's amazing what adding another great defender to a team can do as even Kobe's defense looks better this year.

I know Im back tracking because I said if the Cavs win in Atlanta than LeBron is the MVP so far. But F that, Ill take those words back for now. Last nights game further illustrated my point about LeBrons supporting cast.

LeBron shot 6-20 (30%)
The rest of the team shot 32-57 (56%)
And if you take out Moons 0-5 shooting, the team shot 32-52 (62%)

This has happened several times this season already. Anyone who says LeBron had a great game is fooling themselves. I realize he had 8rbs and 10asts, but most of the time on offense he would hold the ball till the shot clock winded down, and would just chuck up an ugly ass jumper.

Meanwhile Kobe needed 44-4-11 just to barely beat the Warriors at home.

Dont look now, but Kobes avg. 30.4ppg on .485%, LeBrons at 28.3ppg on .496%.

Yea Im sure.. LeBron went 6-20 from the field while his teammates shot 60%.

Kobe had 44-4-11 last night..

But Kobe's the one that needs to step his game up?

So Kobe is the frontrunner for MVP because he scored 44? If thats the case David West should be the MVP he had 44,12 and 4.No chalk that. Jennings should be the MVP becasue he scored 55 on the same non defense playing team.

Yea.. Because last nights game is the only thing Kobe has going for him.

He isnt leaging the league in scoring, on the best team, 3rd in steals, and shooting nearly 49% while playing 1st team defense is he? That must be some other guy..

you know i came to this forum and left espn because i thought there would be better arguments and opinions

posts like these are not helping

if a player who just won the nba championship, finals mvp the year before and is chasing "STEVE NASH" in overall mvps for his career.... and is currently leading the league in scoring with the #1 record and is playing the best basketball of his career on both ends of the basketball court. you would think he would get the nod

but no

not really lol

what a stupid world we live in
