For the time being I still have Embiid ahead, but if he was to miss more time this month I could easily see SGA being the front runner

Nobody is close to Embiid’s PER and his winning percentage (games in which he has played) is higher.

Embiid winning percentage is heavily skewed by his injured games, and PER favours bigs because of the rebounds...
I think the 2 are close, and in case they are close, SGA should win it (for that reason specifically I supported Embiid for MVP last year).

SGA has been incredible, but the efficiency with which Embiid is scoring, rebounding and passing has been otherworldly. On top of that he's playing great defense like SGA. Embiid is also still averaging more points than minutes per game.
If both of them are tied with records I'll go with Embiid. If you can average 34 ppg+ on 65% TS, you are in another stratosphere.
In addition to PER, Embiid's EPM is 11 and SGA is 10.3. SGA had an opportunity to retake that lead, and he wasn't able to over the last week, in a stat that SGA was leading for about a month. Shows you how incredible Embiid has been. And unlike PER, there isn't a heavy skew of rebounds for EPM.
Let's also not forget that he's put up these numbers while not playing the 4th quarter for 9 games. If he wanted he could have easily padded his stats and dropped 40-50 in most of those games, and had an insurmountable statistical lead.

Jokic had better stats than Embiid last year, and Embiid still won, when the stats are close other narratives come into play.
I don't think Embiid didn't deserve the MVP last year, I do think Jokic was done dirty by the media and race narrative, but Embiid was legit MVP winner, by the same token, I give the nudge to SGA this year.

Jokic was not on another planet compared to Embiid statistically last year. He was amazing, and so was Embiid. One was a hyper efficient player who could score, but excelled as a passer. You mentioned stats, they value Jokic more because he's a passing big man. And because he rebounds the balls.
Embiid was just different last year with scoring and defense. That shoudlnt take anything away from him.
I do think they are very close though. I think narrative in the last 2 months will be the difference maker. I also don't think you can just ignore that Embiid is doing all of this while averaging less minutes than points, and having sat out a bunch of 4th quarters. By raw stats he's lapping the field. It;s also not like the Sixers are 6th seed. They are within arms reach of 1st place.

Funny to see how prominent PER has become on this thread this year, when it was often used as a stick to beat Jokic with (so to speak) for being ‘the advanced stats man’ over eye test

I get your point but I’m more interested in number of wins then winning percentage, if we’re discussing most valuable players (you can only be valuable if you’re out there)

No doubt SGA deserves to be in the conversation, but Embiid is literally breaking the record books currently. He has more points than minutes with a higher win% in games played than SGA. SGA is a guard and Embiid averages just as many assists as him while doubling him in rebounds and scoring almost 4 more ppg. And their team record is about the same.
I think SGA will one day win MVP but it’s not gonna happen this year with the way Embiid is playing.

Embiid has the stats and PER, thats' the crazy thing. Last year Jokic had PER, and all advanced stats. But this year Embiid has many of the advanced stats, and ridiculous raw stats.

I have Embiid first right now so I don’t disagree, but when you say Jokic had the advanced stats and Embiid has both advanced and raw stats, you’re referring to simply points aren’t you? Because Jokic’s raw stats last year were ridiculous

Like I said, he’s on a different planet, which is reflected in him dominating the first straw poll.
Embiid: 35/12/6
SGA: 32/6/6
Embiid’s TS% is also marginally higher.
In games played, his winning percentage is also higher.

SGA against some of the league’s best perimeter defenders. If SGA ends up playing 10-15 more games than Embiid, hard to say the guy without the full schedule should get it imo.

I agree with this. Jokic has definitely slipped to 5th after the hot start. Not really a race involving him at the present, though that could change.

Last season, PER was a non-issue as Embiid (31.69) and Jokic (31.78) were so close. This season Embiid is 34.9 and the next closest is 31.48. So, yes, the difference is significant enough to be taken into consideration.

At what point do we start talking about SGA in the MVP conversation?
Crazy as it sounds he's kind of been under the radar with the Chet hype. This dude might legit be a top 7 player in the league right now. OKC gets that #1 seed I think he can make a real push to upset Embiid for MVP.
