The imbalance to me is the difference in ages. Doncic is 25 and Davis is 31. If they were the same age, it would be a fair trade. Seems like the Mavs GM didn’t press this point.

Not to get political, but I think ownership had a lot to do with this trade. The Mavs are owned by Las Vegas Sands Corp, which owns several hotels and casinos. They wanted to get under the luxury tax and avoid paying Luka the supermax because the US Government's new policies negatively affect their other businesses. Hotels import a lot of goods and employ a lot of immigrants.
