stop it. this is not a win now team.

 So they're an up and coming team? Deron/Joe/Wallace aren't young

"win now" implies that they can win something. i think thats what he was implying

Let's see: win a division, win 50 or 60 games, win a playoff series, win another playoff series, win your conference would imply "win now"

He is pretty clueless. Every playoff team is win now mode and only 1 actually makes it out.

I believe he was being sarcastic since Kidd was terrible last year.

Hehehe... glad someone picked up on it :)

Oh, I see what you did there... :)

Why are you guys feelin' bad for Shaw? Isn't it almost likely that he'll land in LA or Denver?

Makes you wonder why Phil Jackson didn't suggest him enough to the Pistons vacancy....I mean Shaw was raised as his protege for a while that if Phil had any say or input, Shaw would have been hooked up.

I wonder if BKN was saying the same thing.

He may have suggested it, but Shaw isn't dumb enough to go there.

Talk about a player/coach relationship. This will be interesting.

To add to the awkwardness of it all:

Brian Shaw went to Bishop O'Dowd HS, a rival HS of St. Joe's High in Alameda, which was Kidd's HS.

This may have already been mentioned when he retired, but what does this do for the salary cap? I thought he was on the hook for another guaranteed year. Does retiring mean that it completely comes off the Knicks' cap?

I remember when Sheed retired that he still got some money, but I'm a little hazy on what happens with retired players. Doubly so since he will now be collecting salary from another team, albeit in a different capacity.

It'll be especially awkward if they wear the same suite

This will be interesting to watch.

Woopie, Kidd and Williams are close, but what about the rest of the team? How do we know he will get along with them? Will he cause schisms due to favoring Deron?

I guess that is what the vet assistant coaches will be for. I will have my popcorn ready.

Deron on the hiring:

Spoke with Deron Williams about the Jason Kidd hire. Let's just say he's excited. Read what he said:

"I think Jay’s going to be a great coach. He’s probably been coaching on the floor for the last five, six years. And I’ve played with him on the Olympic team and seen how smart he is, seen how he was really coaching us out there. He wasn’t starting and wasn’t playing much, but he was coaching. He always had suggestions for Coach K. His basketball IQ is just off the charts and so I think he’s been the leader everywhere he has went, he kind of changed the culture everywhere he went and won. So that’s what we need."

Q:So what about what you and other players said about needing an experienced coach?

"At the time, that was kind of the thought. I think when you look around the league and you see kind of what Shaq said with the recycled coaches, that doesn’t always work either. I think it’s a risk by taking Jay. Nobody knows if he’s going to be a great coach. It’s going to take him a couple years to adjust. But at the same time, he could be a great coach off the bat. It’s a risk, but I think it’s somebody we can grow with. I think it’s somebody we’re definitely going to respect and listen to. And I’m excited about the ways he’s going to help me as a player and a leader."

Q: He was your idol growing up?

"He was my favorite player growing up. So I had a chance to watch him play growing up and try to emulate him when I was playing against him, playing with him. Now I’m being coached by him. It’s funny how things work out."

Q: Are you worried about your friendship interfering with player-coach relationship?

"I think he’s my coach so he’s going to have to yell at me, he’s going to have to let me know when I’m not doing what I’m supposed to do, I don’t take it personal. He’s about winning, and I am too. And that’s all that matters."

Mike Dunleavy played his last NBA game in 1990, and then was hired as the head coach of the Lakers the same year, and led them to the NBA finals before losing to the Bulls.

Freaking great point. I am a magic fan but Thankyou for the comparison. I for one don't admire Jason Kidd as a person. But his success on the court post player is yet to be seen.

If anyone in the league has the coaching material it's Jason Kidd, he never had to have a system to maximise his talent, put him on a talented team and he would do what he needed to win, what he did for the Nets (Kidd + 2 good players and 9 scrubs) was incedible

I think it's all dictated by the Kidd-Deron relationship. If D-Will embraces Kidd's influence then he will look a whole lot better on both sides of the court, if he doesn't it could end ugly.

That's a fact, though if your money is on anybody to make the transition then it's Kidd.
