This is like an ex-girlfriend showing up at your doorstep, the day before your wedding. It's a basketball rom-com, and the Clippers are hoping the Mavs will be left befuddled at the altar.

Unfortunately, tomorrow is the day verbal contracts are put on paper. So this hilarity won't last more than 24 hours.

Dallas better have its own "2nd and 3rd" meetings with DeAndre.

And remind DeAndre that if he goes back to LA and things still suck for him (at least in his eyes), or suck worse, they own his rights for several years...

I blame Cuban. Shouldn't have had DeAndre commit via Cyberdust.

Don't the Celtics have the Mavs pick?

Jordan already dug the knife deep into clippers fans hearts and if he doesnt go back he's effectively taking it out to stab them again.

That. That would be a mess.

Personally, I would really become a Clippers hater now.

Footage of the meeting. I think that's Chris Paul in the center:

Heck they should just ask for one final meeting that involves cheerleaders and a hot tub.

I don't blame the Clippers for doing whatever they can to keep him before it becomes official. It's just comical that it took them this long. If they really wanted him that desperately they should've shown it in their meeting. I'm not sure who was in that meeting but I would've made sure CP3 (full from swallowing his pride), Blake, whoever his best friend on the team is, his mama, his dog, his goldfish, were all there in that meeting let him know how much he means to the team. Instead, it seems like all of us outside of the Clippers org were the only ones who knew they weren't squat without DJ. Too little too late.

They definitely should have done the full pitch right from the get go.

I wanted him to re-sign with the Clips, but right now I am hoping DJ just stays with his decision because this whole thing is weak.

I don't think it's wrong or anything, and not sure if there really is an 'unwritten rule' about it. But the Clips made their bed awhile back and now will have to lie in it.

Surely Chandler Parsons will be right outside the door after DJ leaves the meeting anyhow, and apparently you just can't say no to him.

Well from what I'm reading the clips didn't decide to make a move til Jordan let it be known he was having second thoughts about his decision

I wonder if Cuban has any legal recourse. In business, oral/handshake agreements are binding - especially if there are many witnesses. Fagan will have witnessed it surely, and I'm sure Cuban wasn't there alone. I understand the league says no agreements can be official until tomorrow, BUT can their rules supercede the law?

They're over the cap with or without him so they never had any money to spend anyway, part of the reason him leaving now was such a blow

You will be the #1 option on offense

MitchellUK wrote:Re: the moratorium comments in this thread, it exists to allow the NBA/NBPA to finalise the previous years financials and establish the precise cap number for the upcoming season. Since NBA max/minimum/midlevel deals are set as a percentage of the overall cap, you can't sign a contract if you don't know exactly what the pay is. The fact that they get all of that stuff completed and signed off in a week is fairly miraculous as it is.

I agree with the people who feel he should be able to back out of this. With the way the NBA works, his deal has a direct domino effect on other players and franchises. What if he backs out and the Mavs offer Robin Lopez a deal, which he accepts? Then the Knicks lose their projected starting center. So on and so forth.

So then don't let free agency start until that number is finalized. Easy solution.

Kind of a bad analogy though. I mean wouldn't you just throw your ex one last one, then explain that it's really over, and get married anyway? Or is that bad?

I hadn't read that. If Jordan actually did "let it be known" that he was having second thoughts, then I would do exactly what the Clips did, plus send Clipper Darryl as well.
