It's crazy to me how fans put so much value on Trae's scoring and ignore the fact that he can't guard a dead body.

Re: ice trae- stop sleeping
Currently, Trae is #2 offensively in just about all the major value impact metrics such as
EPM
RAPTOR
LEBRON
Keep in mind that Jokic is having a historic year, so it is maybe not too outlandish to say that in an average year, Trae's impact so far this year would be in contention for the best offensive player of the season. This is assuming that his significant jump in 3 point percentage is real and he continues to play as he has been for the rest of the year.

He's also #2 in RAPM. I would say he's been at the absolute worst the third best offensive player in the league (behind Steph and Jokic) but probably 2nd with a small argument for 1st.
The issue is his defense is so awful that he goes from 2nd in all these impact metrics to:
EPM: 14th
RAPTOR: 20th
LEBRON: 34th
RAPM: 147th

Great player but man, his defense needs major work. He needs a DPOY anchor behind him.

This can't be fixed. You live with that. He's way too small. The Hawks need at least 2 good to great defenders. Only Hunter and Capela (or owongu) on the lineup(and on the roster in general) won't cut it.

I can see him being better for the PS, but I wonder if he will kind of be like an Isaiah Thomas where he will always be among the worst defenders in the league. His frame just doesn't seem like it will really allow for too much else. Even someone like an AI who was a solid negative on D, had long arms and better natural athleticism.

Re: ice trae- stop sleeping
Most high level offensive players these days aren't good defensively. Odd that it's only discussed with one of them.
"It's a-cause Tray's da worse in the history of the league, kg." - rando RgM jackleg
I recall, in particular, Beal was bottom 5 in all these defensive metrics too. But he was voted an all-star and all-NBA in a year where his team and stats were objectively worse. Like I said, it's odd how it's a picked and chosen talking point.

Huh? Did you miss all of the “harden can’t guard a chair “ threads?
Trae is not the only one talked about.

Trae isn't even the worst defensive player on the team. It's Bogi, but no one wants to talk about that. That's the real problem. It's not Trae's defense per se, its the combination of having two horrific guard defenders in the same lineup. Hawks need to improve the defense around Trae and then Trae's defense won't stand out nearly as much.

I do, I've been saying all along. He looks like he uses defence as mild aerobics for weight control purposes.

Does it stop Harden from getting accolades? Nope.

So now you’re changing the topic…

Its beyond brutal when fans say Trae's defense is dumpster fire bad because he's too small
He's listed at 6'1 ... so he's taller than VanVleet, yet Fred is an elite defender
Defense comes down to high basketball IQ, toughness, motor, and desire to win. Physical gifts like height and length are a bonus, not a must.
Trae has none of those intangibles, and that's the issue

My new nickname for Bogi is the Narcoleptic because it honestly looks like he falls asleep standing up while he's on defense. I've never seen a guy give up more backdoor cuts than Bogi.
Bogi's best defensive move is to put his hands on his head in frustration after giving up an easy bucket while he takes a cat nap in the lane. He does this at least 3x per game.
I'm sure his stats are better than Trae, but considering the difference in their frame, athletic ability and offensive on ball usage I argue that Bogi is actually a worse defender.
Either way, having the two of them out there has been a defensive disaster. It's the reason we give up more wide open corner 3s than any team in the league.

Jabari Parker. We drafted him. Second pick.

Well his offensive positives outweigh his defensive negatives so that's probably why.
Plus we all already know he's not a good defender. So randomly bringing it up just to bag on the guy feels lame and pointless.
Now one can argue how relevant any arbitrary statistical mark is, but I'm never bothered by fans wanting to enjoy those marks. This is supposed to be fun after all.

A PG who averages 20 6 and 5 with elite defense is much more valuable than the one who averages 28 and kills his team with his horrible effort on the other end.

Re: ice trae- stop sleeping
Fred played a much superior game last night. Trey is extremely gifted offensively but his defense is just abysmal. The excuse that he can never get better defensively is BS. Of course he can.
