I seriously doubt LeBron would have ever gone back to Cleveland if he didn’t win any rings in Miami. But more importantly, what exactly do you mean by “put LeBron in his place”? LeBron wanted rings. That's the entire reason he went to Miami in the first place. He got two of them. What else could he have possibly wanted in Miami that was more important than winning a title?

The only reason he went to Cleveland is because Irving was an emerging star there, and Cleveland had a very real chance at acquiring Kevin Love in trade with the assets that they had. There was nothing more he could achieve with the roster he had in Miami. If he truly wanted to go down as one of the all time greats, he had to be the one to end the sports curse in Cleveland, and he did, and now he's considered a top 3 all time great.
