It's not controversial - it's just a weak decision not to play for your home country. We're allowed to pan him for this. He's a front runner anyways and I've lost all respect for him
I am no fan of Embiid but I don't think I have any more problem with him playing on the US than I would any of the other players playing on countries other than their home ones. In fact Embiid has lived in the US and become a citizen very legitimately. The only difference is that as you say, Embiid is a kind of front runner/loser and is joining a stacked team. But this is a problem with Embiid not his choice.
