Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if this is done by tonight. Everything I'm reading from Stein, Broussard, etc. is saying it's all locked in except for who takes Petro. Petro's a bad contract but not that bad, it won't stop this.

I expect they're doing a quick call to all the other teams in the league to see if a Petro for expirings deal is on the table. If not I think NJ keeps him cause they're already bending over enough, Billy King clearly is a rusty spoon of negotiating

No guarantee Melo will sign off on deal. He's mum about that. NJ likes chances though.

Sounds to me like they're still missing the most important thing...

Denver wants draft picks. New Jersey has them. New York doesn't. That's a big factor here.

Source: DEN keeps telling NY it doesn't like its pieces, and when NY asks for direction on what to go get for Nugs, DEN hasn't been clear.

I think Melo's in, they wouldn't have taken it this far without that if he was in Bosh "NY or FA" mode

Especially considering it sounds like Billups and Rip are a request by Melo and his agents.

There was that, and then there were these...

There's momentum toward getting a deal done, because Denver's ready. "They're getting a lot of pressure from Melo's people," executive says.

Would Melo's agent work so hard to get Rip in deal, only have to client refuse $65M contract in NJ? Melo does waffle, but seems unlikely.

Of course, Melo still has to sign off on all this & agree to ext with NJ, but NJ getting indications Melo's agreeable.....

NJ getting indications Melo sit-down with Mikhail Prokhorov and Jay-Z may not even be necessary to convince Melo to sign w/NJ.

apparently a deal is possible within the next 48
The Nets would get Anthony and Chauncey Billups from the Nuggets, and Richard Hamilton from the Pistons. In turn, the Nets would send Devin Harris, Derrick Favors and at least two first-round picks to Denver and Troy Murphy’s expiring contract to Detroit.

Smitty, that's true, but since those quotes are from the same writer (saying Melo is in, and saying nobody knows what Melo wants), it kinda sounds like these guys are talking out of their asses, just guessing.

Who knows though.

Not necessarily. Nets and Nuggets wants to push hard so Melo feels like he doesn't have a choice, they've been doing that a long time.

As for Billups and Rip being a request by Melo; huh?

Billups is making it clear he doesn't want to play in NJ, so why would Melo request that? I don't know anything about Rip, but I thought that was just to get a 3-way deal going.

The big dogs like Stein and Broussard don't report trades unless they're legit. There's a point where doubt can be put into trade talk reports, when the ESPN guys get to it there is no doubt to its legitimacy. And that's not including Woj who's credibility people continue to underrate because of how opinionated he is otherwise, nobody else has more scoops on trades

I mean, Jersey wouldn't be that stupid to assume Melo would sign on board for another 3 years and press onward with that assumption... would they?

If it goes down, the Denver Nuggets are making out like thieves in the night. They can flip Devin at the deadline/draft for a few more nice assets to add to their treasure trove.

Agreed, Ty Lawson has been playing well for them if they can flip and trade devin harris this would turn out to be a NUGGET of a trade

what's so bad about Petro that would prevent the Magic from getting involved in this and taking him off of NJ's hands?

It's a billion dollar business with millions resting on this deal. And then they are giving denver all of their draft picks and a rookie big and take on some big contracts. There's no way NJ does the deal without Melo agreeing on the extension.

this is not that good for Detroit - they should try to get some younger pieces instead of getting Murphy and Petro who will ultimately only stunt Monroe's development...

He is overpaid by about a million and at best should be an end of the rotation big, but he is better then no backup center.

If this deal goes down the Nets win huge.Having a starting line up of Billups/Melo/Rip/Humphries /Lopez plus a beanch with Farmer/Sasha/Outlaw and Graham should be enough even this year to get them into the playoffs at the 7th or 8th seat.Their only problem would be that they would need to get a back up PF or C to be a true contender, maybe in the offseason.I also don't believe that the Nets would buyout Billups they need him as their starting PG.I also think his stantces on things will change once he goes to New Jersey and get back together with his boy RIP and they start winning some games.

As far as the Nuggest go they would have a line of Lawson/Afflalo/Smith/Favors/Nene with a bench of Harris/Harrington/Anderson/Carter and what ever else they get in the deal. They will diffentely fall down in the standings but they might still make it at the 8th spot. But next offseason they could really turn this rebuilding thing around fast with the draft picks, exprinings and being able to trade Harris.

The only lossers in this deal is the Pistions.Hamiltion might have some years left on his deal but he's still a good player that can get you 18-20 points a game and will be able to for the next few seasons. All they get is some cap room, but as Joey D has shown over the last few offseason to pin your hopes I him doing something that actaully helps the team with it.Just look at all of his bad signings.

dumping rip for murphy saves the pistons 25mil, wouldn't call them losers.

It'll be the Magic, land of the overpaid. If the Magic can flop out Duhon on QRich for 7' backup C, getting 10 mins/night, I don't see why they wouldn't try to get in this (if finding a landing place for Petro is a problem).

The Nets would be in a much better situation to pull this off if it wasn't for the Murphy trade and the Outlaw+Petro+Farmar signings in the off-season.
