if the kid goes up with it and gets blocked but still maintains possession, then its a travel, unless a foul is called.

like someone said, ball doesn't lie, shoot for it. or give it to the other team and just agree that the next 50-50 call goes to your team.

Kid who gets blocked has to release the ball, in the NBA thats a jump ball but on the playground or gym defense gets the ball

in italy on pickup games we say "palla contesa palla alla difesa" that means "contended ball->ball to the team that was defending". otherwise i think that's a travel. or you can shoot a three, ball never lies

I've never in my life seen a jumpball playing pick-up games. I don't know how y'all do it in the states but around here we shoot for the ball.

where i play (in/around chicago), its a "jump ball" which means its a possession arrow-type thing. the team that starts with the ball at the start of the game has the possession arrow.
