Well, David Robinson was 32 with only 7 NBA seasons' worth of mileage on his body when Duncan showed up. Going into next year, Dirk would be 35 with 14 NBA seasons' worth of mileage.

Not only did he have quite a bit left in the tank, he also got a guy he played with well and a coach who knew how to use the two without clashing.

What team(s) will have jumped ahead of them in the Western Conference?
Rockets? no
Suns? no
Blazers? probably not
Wolves? most likely yes
Warriors/Kings/Hornets? doubt it

But do the Nuggets and Jazz keep their playoff spots? Nuggets probably do. The Jazz? They have quite a few players that will be playing for a new contract, so they have the motivation.

If Bogut and Curry remain relatively healthy Warriors could, but that's a big if.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

Doubt they make it if Dirk misses 10 or more games which seems like it could be very likely. They're already a fringe playoff team and the west should be pretty competitive. Dirk missing time will be the difference in a few games, so I can see them missing out.

They have new pieces, but the 4 guys expected to be key contributors (Collison, Mayo, Kaman and Brand) have never played with the team and without the glue that holds this team together (Dirk) I think they'll stumble out the gate.

If Dirk were to miss a lot of the season I don't think they even sniff the playoffs and I think Cuban goes into rebuild mode as Marion is their 2nd best player currently

Kaman is a terrible fit next to Nowitzki, IMO. Them playing together didn't really work out all that great on the German national team either because they're both horrible defenders.had more to do with the perimeter of Germany being one of the worst in international play

Collison should be able to compensate the loss of Jason Kidd (who was terrible last year).
But unless OJ Mayo magically turns his career around losing Terry will hurt them a lot.
The addition of Elton Brand is ok and will allow them to give Dirk some much needed rest but overall the roster is not competitive enough to reach the playoffs. 35 wins max. 35 wins as a ceiling? i don't expect them to be too dominant but 35 is really low.

The only advantage they have on other teams is that they're experienced.

I say they make it barring another injury to dirk.

if you've read the dallas board, lilojmayo hasn't given up on OJ. If Dirk plays well, OJ plays well, and Collison/Kaman/Brand/Marion bring stability and consistency then they have a good shot.

I think it will take some time with the roster turnover but Carlisle will have them in contention.

It's really going to be interesting with the Wolves expected to turn the corner & if the Warriors can put a healthy product on the floor.

An always competitive West is going to be even moreso this season!

Like everyone is saying it depends on Dirk

I'd say without a doubt if we had the healthy Dirk from several years ago for 75+ games.
He's dragged worse teams to a 7th/8th seed

Dirk's age is catching up. I don't think they make it.

I hope this thread is a reaction to the Dirk possible knee surgery move and not an overreaction to two pre-season games for basically a new team that has had a week of training camp, and only one loss in those pre-season games.

Other teams have not given reasons to not have faith in Dirk and the maVs.

If I had to guess, I'd say no. However, there are four slots for the Jazz, Mavs, Wolves, and Warriors. At least one of those teams will probably have a critical injury that knocks them out, so if that's not the Mavs, they are 66% to make it.

As said, if Dirk isn't healthy, we don't make it, but if this knee injury isn't to severe, I think we get in., Maybe on paper GSW and MIN look good, but MIN still has no Rubio, Curry is bound to get some type of injury this season, Bogut's injury's have been freak injuries, but still who knows what. If Dirk stays healthy I've got us somewhere from 6-8

LAL
SAS
OKC
MEM
LAC
DAL
DEN
MIN

is my current ranking with the Warriors a game or maybe even a half game off of 8.

I don't think MINN and GS have proven enough for me to count them in over DAL. Even Utah. But they are definitely not guaranteed to make the playoffs, and it will be a dogfight for them until the end of the season. They had a better team last year imo

They've put a lot of stock into OJ Mayo this year, stepping up into a starters role.

That is a mistake.

There's a reason the Grizz let him walk for nothing. Don't get me wrong, I like OJ as a player he's just not a starter on a contending team. He'll have his nights but he too inconsistent and he can't play the point which makes him an SG tweener.

And he doesn't do anything very well except to score... and he's inconsistent on that end. I guess the Grizzlies are thinking they should've simply kept Love instead.

Nah, I'd rather have Randolph than Love and keeping Love would have meant no signing Randolph and not being the team we are now which is better than most.

Are you serious that you'd rather have Randolph than Love? Even if we streeeeeetch it and say Randolph is currently better than Love (Which hes not) the fact is that Love is 23 and Randolph is 30. You'll have a much longer competitive team with Love than Randolph
