For Mullen to be serviceable offensively he's going to have to shoot really well from three point range. Right now he's shooting 43% from 3pt range in the preseason but we've been through this with Mullens before already. After the first couple of weeks last season he was putting up some numbers while shooting an unsustainable 60% from 16-23 feet. A thread was posted on the General board at the time: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1149828

Mullens would regress, and finished the season shooting about 35% from 16-23 feet, with an overall TS% well below 50%. Nearly half of his FGA came from that range, and almost three quarters of his offense was assisted (he cannot create his own offense).

Rationally, and considering Mullens' history, I have to think that he will not be close to a 40% three point shooter. Some are making the comparison to Channing Frye, but Frye was a much better mid-range shooter than Mullens before he began shooting threes in Phoenix. Frye had seasons of 43% and 47% from 16-23 feet before joining the Suns - 10% better than Mullens on average.

He's not good at defense, his rebounding is average at best - but I guess he's had a hot four games shooting three pointers.

Watching Mullen's 31 pt game against the Bucks from last year, he had 14 baskets. More than half were inside five feet. If Mullens was just an outside shooting Ryan Anderson type, I might agree with the grim assessment. Mullens has the potential to be much more because he's a better athlete than Anderson...who is not the worst athlete in the league. To be sure Mullens still has to make marked progress to be considered just an above average ballplayer. We'll see what he looks like two years from now.

if there was a 22 year old 7fter that had a game like this for the Raptors last year he'd already be a surefire hof ballot

You're cherry picking one game that is a statistical outlier for Mullens: http://bkref.com/tiny/hTS7Y

For more than half the games he played he didn't even make more than two FG inside of six feet. He is not prolific in the paint even for a young guy.

I don't want to bash on him too much, but my point is that if we're using age and inexperience as a reason to think about Mullens as 'possibly a future star', you could do that with almost all the other players his age or younger. Mullens has a loooong way to go. He was well under 50% TS and ended the season shooting below league average from the spot where he supposedly thrived. There's no questioning his athleticism, but I'm just afraid he'll never be really good at basketball.

Congrats. You have just compared him to Charlie Villaneuva, although Charlie was younger and put up far better stats his rookie year.

Charlie V should have been a really good player he just never had the worth ethic.

Possibly. He made a giant leap forward last year and if hes able to maintain progress, he could maybe make an all star game one day.

I could definitely see him scoring 18ppg+ this year as the Bobcats top option

Well he is playing on the Bobcats so he'll be able to inflate his stats. I don't see him being a future star player in this league. He'll probably end up like Charlie V.

Kemba
Hendo
MKG
Mullens
Biyombo

I have a lot of faith in the future of that lineup, to be honest. I'm buying low on these guys right now.

I'm intrigued by the future possibilities of a MKG-Mullens-Biyombo frontline. It sure wouldn't lack for athleticism. I'm as interested in the progress of Biyombo as much as Mullens.

8th pick in the draft at worst.
