I've always wanted to know this, too. I sure hope it is flatfooted without shoes.

I heard that Mutombo was brought in on a stretcher before his measurements, because he had been laying flat for hours to keep his spine from compressing (like astronauts) to get the max measurement.

That's crappy. I have to adjust a lot of my size thinking.

Wingspan and height doesn't get you a true standing reach. People have long necks, or wide shoulders (Vertical reach with narrow shoulders + long wing span > vertical reach with wide shoulders +long wing span).
In '03-'04, Jerry Sloan coached the ESPN predicted "worst team of all time" to 42-40.

og15 wrote:Yup, height is pretty overrated by people. Elton Brand was/is called "undersized" despite having one of the longest reaches in the NBA, people were somehow surprised that a guy with a reach of 9'2 and wingspan of 7'5"5" was blocking shots and finishing so well despite his head being at 6'8.25" without shoes. Technically he's even really 6'9 with shoes if we give him 0.5 inches with shoes.

I mentioned it in when the Clippers traded Bledsoe and brought in Redick. Redick is listed at 6'5 (6'4 without shoes, 6'4.75 with shoes) Bledsoe is 6'1 (6'0 without shoes) but Bledsoe has a longer wingspan and reach.Redick 8'1.5 standing reach, 6'3.25 wingspan, Bledsoe 8'2 reach, 6'7.5" wingspan and Bledsoe is stronger, faster and can jump higher. I was one of the few Clipper fans that wanted Bledsoe at SG because other Clipper fans were mentioning players like Mayo, Redick, Ellis who despite their head height either had less length than Bledsoe or barely more, but people viewed it as a size upgrade just because of position labels and listed height. Though there were other reasons I wasn't huge on Monta and Mayo.

Defensively, the team got smaller at SG despite the idea that you now have a 6'5 guy as opposed to a 6'1 guy, and fans and even coaches and some GM's seem to forget this sometimes. The top of your head just isn't what is performing basketball activities, outside of seeing over the defense better, and there's a limit to the value of that, there's nothing that the top of your head is doing,

Length wise, Redick is a PG, not a SG, that's why despite not actually looking bad on defense when it comes to rotations, positioning, moving feet, contesting etc, his effectiveness just doesn't seem to be there, well he's a PG trying to contest SG's. If he had good length in proportion to his body, with the same activity and energy, he'd actually be an above average defender to good defender. Of course if he had that he would also be able to get off more shots against defenders and be a better finisher in the paint and therefore be a better NBA player. Redick has / has developed the shooting handling, off ball game (even more) and the tools skill wise to have been a starter his whole career, but not the physical tools. If he had length and he put in the same work, he would actually be an All-Star caliber player. Being able to get off a couple more shots cleanly a game and finish over (reach) / around or past (wingspan) defenders in the paint, that adds to your offensive efficacy and ability,

I agree with a lot of what you said, including wanting Bledsoe over those other guys, but body height does matter. The more size you have in your body the harder you are to move off the block, the more physical you can be etc… Does help position defense.

Goddamn you guys are tall.

my measurements:
height (barefoot) = 5' 8.25"
wingspan (a.k.a. reach in boxing, fingertip to fingertip) = 6' 2.5"
standing reach (barefoot) = 7' 7.25"
arm length (armpit to end of fist) = 25.25"

found this video showing how they measure standing reach at the draft combine (unfortunately, can't see his feet):

found this article showing average height, wingspan and standing reach for each position in the NBA, based on DX database but weighted by minutes played. includes discussion of notable 2014 draftees w.r.t. these measurements.

http://analyticsgame.com/nba/average-nb ... ments.html

NBA Averages (accounts for incomplete measurement data by using some sort of regression model):

Code: Select all

Position   Height (no shoes)   Height (shoes)   Wingspan   Standing reach
   PG           6' 0.9"           6' 2.0"        6' 5.0"       8' 0.9"
   SG           6' 4.2"           6' 5.3"        6' 8.3"       8' 5.2"
   SF           6' 6.5"           6' 7.7"        6'11.1"       8' 8.6"
   PF           6' 7.9"           6' 9.4"        7' 1.1"       8'11.0"
   C            6' 9.8"           6'11.0"        7' 3.0"       9' 1.3"

Elton Brand had freakish standing reach for his height, even by NBA standards.

This thread reminds me of a video I recently saw of Bruno Caboclo where he pinned a basketball against the rim easily while flat-footed. Considering how he's just a typical 6'8/6'9 SF, my jaw dropped when I saw that. I mean, I knew he was long but goodddaaamn. In Summer League play, his length makes teammate DeAndre Daniels look tiny when they're next to each other. That's absurd to think about when you realize Daniels is noted for his supreme length too.

also.. If I remember correctly, Muggsy Bogues had a wingpsan well above his height as well.

Height: 6'3 (192 cm) without shoes
Wingspan: Image
6'1(186) and cannot palm the ball even if i tried very hard.

Before i knew anything about wingspan, i could never understand why it was very hard to guard people that are my height and on top of that, they could dunk from standing position, while i could dunk a 180 with some space, but never was even close to dunking from standing position. When you're taller and have a hard time guarding little guys with freakish wingspan it pretty demoralizing .
