Russell got one two years ago. Not a person who cares for big media attention, despite being one of (in my mind) the greatest players of all time. He didn't even wanted to have the statue, because of the wrong reasons. He doesn't wanted to be remebered as a ball player, he wants to be known as a great human being who made a difference to the people arround him.

As for Larry i guess, time will tell. He got one in his homestate.

Jerry West, Kobe, Magic. Those are Lakers. A name not mentioned who I'd absolutely give a statue over Shaq is Elgin Baylor.

Why would you give a statue to a guy who couldn't win a championship over the one of the most dominant forces in the sports history who won 3 for the franchise? Statues are given for the accomplishments not the amount of years played for the team.
Elgin never won a championship nor the mvp award. I wouldn't have a problem seeing both getting their statues built but picking Elgin over Shaq? That's just reaching.

Banners and retired numbers are for accomplishments, statues should stand for way more than that.

The word accomplishment consists of many things, even the thing like putting the franchise back on the map is considered accomplishment, this is what shaq did, otherwise they would have been that early 00s mavs level team, stacked up but not enough to win it all.

I don't know every detail of the 50 60s 70s era basketball but what did elgin baylor do exactly that was significantly more meaningful to the lakers franchise than what shaq did in those 8 seasons?

Was elgin ballin out there and fighting for the black rights like bill russell or kareem?

By the way it's not that hard to spend the whole career with lakers, first of all its the city, and second that franchise was always good enough to at least make the playoffs and make some noise. Minus the current laker franchise and couple of years from 00s 90s and 70s

They should build a miniature statue for elgin out there with the textwork saying "sorry elgin, them celtics were better"

I have a hard time seeing Shaq getting a statue for the Lakers ahead of Jerry West

There is a statue of Bill Russell in Boston.

It's ok, but I'd rather see him rebounding or BLOCKING someone with illusion of motion, a la Wilt statue.
There is no Bird AFAIC but I hope they fix this. Some sick pass, or, better, finger in the air and warm-up jacket.
