At this point he'll be lucky to top Oden. We've been talking about his potential (2 years) longer than he has displayed any (half a college season). I'd gladly eat my words in order to see a generational star play, but these lingering comparisons are starting to become irrational.

If he ends up even as good as Rik Smits that would be a miracle.

Assuming that was the intention for posting this thread.

Will this player that hasn't played in 2 years be on Hakeem's and Shaq's level? Seems like a serious topic created by a Lakers' fan.

I'd like to see him finish his career before I risk giving an opinion that could be proven wrong

He doesn't have the sheer power or girth as Shaq and will play a totally different style.

I think the closest comp is Kareem. He is the only guy with that kind of size, skill and athleticism that the game has seen. The kid has amazing ability to pick up things quickly and only started playing basketball in 2010 or 2011. He starts 2013 coming off the bench at Kansas and within 20 games he is the concensus #1 pick in the draft over the pre-ordained next great ones, Jabari and Wiggins. The big question is health but the foot has fully healed now and he doesn't seem to have lost anything. He has taken the time to strengthen and remold his body and improve the finesse components of his game.

Embiid is what "The Process" was all about.

I guess the Hakeem comparisons weren't enough for (one of) you Sixer fans. No, you are now comparing him to arguably the greatest player in the history of basketball. I've seen it all.

PS: To the Lakers fan who made this thread, I think that this thread would've gone better if you had just put the title as "Embiid's Ceiling" and left it at that.

One can argue he's the most overhyped player in realgm history. The comparisons alone and he hasn't played a single game.

For fun I'll say Hakeem. He looks more skilled than Shaq.

Wow. I'm eager to see what the kid has got, but a thread about which Top 10 all time (Hakeem might be #11) center is his ceiling is ridiculously premature.

His ceiling is made of glass. Tap too hard in the wrong spot and he shatters.

In general when trying to establish the potential of an unproven player it is best to not use two Hall of Fame players as the either/or of the comparison.

Also, what is the margin here? No matter how you may rate one over the other, Hakeem & Shaq are pretty much at the very top of the list when comparing all-time centers.

Honestly he's a bust at this point. If he can at least end up being a decent basketball player at all that's worth celebrating.

Unfortunately his foot is f-ed up. Bad feet for big men are tragic. It screws them completely. For 7 footers, it's a complete disaster scenario. And it's costed Joel 2 seasons already. He hasn't even played in the NBA yet.

I loved his potential but at this point, it seems like it'd take a miracle just to get him out of rehab, on the bench and eventually into the rotation. That's his real ceiling right now - serviceable big guy. Once he hits that level, then he can start working his way up.
