Woj just published a follow up to last week's story that Manu is seriously considering retirement and is meeting with Pop this week.

Something about this is leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

While Manu is FULLY within his rights to retire and forego the pay out on his last year, The fact that he is pondering this decision at the tail end of the off season is upsetting to me.

Had he told this to the Spurs in May, would they have prepared differently? Would they have tried to trade him somewhere he'd feel more valuable? Would they have looked to sign another wing player?

At this point, it feels like most teams are relatively set with their rosters, and now your last remaining on-court connection to the Glory Spurs, who ideally would help communicate to new players what the Spurs culture and expectations are, is talking about walking away.

Anyone else think the timing just sucks?

Timing sucks, that doesn't mean it's malicious on Manu's part. Maybe up until now he thought his body would be right for the season or that the Spurs might be contenders and he could put in some minimal time and finish out the year.

Nobody knows but Manu isn't the player he was and he's much older. If the Spurs weren't planning around the limited usage of a 41 year old player then that's on them because even though he played 20 mpg, he's not a dramatic contributor anymore.

So he didn't know how old he was 2 months ago?

And the flipside is didn't the Spurs know how old he was 2 months ago?

Im trying to find anything "drama" related to this story and I just cant. Its not like he has some huge cap hold that if he decides to retire now, it kept SA from having a chance to sign someone else. The Spurs are currently at 115m for their payroll, the 2.5m that Manu is making wouldve had 0 effect on their ability to sign anyone.

Would they have tried to trade him somewhere where he would feel more valuable? The dude was 40 years old playing 20mpg on a playoff team. Not sure where he couldve gone where he would be in a more valuable role. I also doubt at 41 he wants to move to a new city, get used to a new training staff and all that.

Im pretty sure this was all planned by Manu and the coaching staff last year. Sure they just told him to take a few months and let his body recuperate and see how he is feeling. Im just having a hard time trying to find the "drama" here. Now if he wanted to play his final year but SA was trying to force him to retire and that went public, sure I could call that drama. But this just seems like how a lot of franchises deal with their aging stars on the brink of retirement.

My point is, a guy who's been with the organization THAT LONG, you'd think he'd want to keep them in the loop and say "Hey, just so you know ... im thinking about this, so if that affects your off season planning, I get it"

The guy is 41 years old. The Spurs should have been planning for Manu's replacement 3-4 years ago. If the Spurs were really waiting on Manu's decision before making a move, then they aren't very good planners.

With all due respect you have no idea why he's considering retirement. It's possible he's nearing training camp and has just been unable to get his body back to where it needs to be for another season and is now finally grappling with the realities of Father Time.

Even if he changed his kind (or never made it up in the first place) Manu is the type of player you allow to take his time with this decision and hold a roster spot open just in case. He's a minimum player at this point so worst case your opportunity cost is a minimum player. Heat are doing the same thing with Wade.

Must be hard for guys like Vince Dirk Manu and Jason Terry to hang it up for good after spending about half their life in the league.

I feel like they like the idea of retiring, but then a few months in they'll really start to miss the league.

I'm sure this will greatly matter to the voters who put him in the Basketball HOF on the first ballot.

Everyone knows that that Manu we know retired when he went bald, and was unable to sell those flops as effectively.

There's no drama here.

Maybe he spent the summer with his family and decided he’d rather do that instead of playing basketball anymore? You’re looking too much into this.

Seems like the OP is trying to make something out of nothing.

October needs to come around already.

It would be better for the Spurs if Manu could have given them a decision at the end of the season but he's earned the right to take his time with this. Considering that Manu is still in the consideration stage it's likely he just simply wanted to see how well his body felt after the offseason before making his decision. The Spurs probably know this and are willing to give him whatever time he needs to decide. I don't think Manu will have a significant impact on how the Spurs will manage their roster.

He's 41 years old and technically was supposed to retire last season. Nothing else really to say here.
