It is very interesting what happened in South Korea and should be a lesson for all. AFAIK their containment efforts were going well but almost undone by a ‘superspreader’ who infected a bunch of people at her church (which of course leads to more transmissions):

This is why it’s not just an old persons’ disease, this about paying it forward and doing your best for everyone in your family, community, state, country, world...

Trump said yesterday in the task force press conference that this could get cleaned up in the final draft of the bill.
And I agree, it should get fixed.
That's the thing though, how can you trust what he says when he constantly says things that are not true or with no intention to follow thru on them? He seems to be meeting with CEO's regularly and its obvious what they would want. My guess is that they do end up fixing it eventually but way too late leading to more infections and financial hardship that could have been avoided had they included this right away.

Also if they give it in the form of a tax cut instead of actual checks/temporary disability, people are really gonna be ****.

Not an expert on this so may not have all the details correct. My understanding is that if your company of 500+ employees does not have sick leave or if they do but its a lame one (like most companies in the country) then they would be excluded from being required to offer 2 weeks of paid sick leave for full time employees. Apparently over 50% of workers fall in that bucket.

That's part of what is being discussed. Which if that's what they end up doing it benefits overwhelmingly people that are doing well and prob don't need the help.

Wow that is bad. I work in a hospital system that would include me. I have about 2 months of paid leave I can use. I do private counseling on the side, and we just got permission from our state to do telemental health until the end of April. I won't complain too much because many workers in the US are not so lucky, particularly ones in the service or travel industry.

Re: Semi-OT: Coronavirus (COVID-19) Discussion Thread III (Info. Post 1)
Sweeping new federal recommendations announced on Monday for Americans to sharply limit their activities appeared to draw on a dire scientific report warning that, without action by the government and individuals to slow the spread of coronavirus and suppress new cases, 2.2 million people in the United States could die.
To curb the epidemic, there would need to be drastic restrictions on work, school and social gatherings for periods of time until a vaccine was available, which could take 18 months, according to the report, compiled by British researchers. They cautioned that such steps carried enormous costs that could also affect people’s health, but concluded they were “the only viable strategy at the current time.”
That is because different steps, intended to drive down transmission by isolating patients, quarantining those in contact with them and keeping the most vulnerable apart from others for three months, could only cut the predicted death toll by half, the new report said.
Asked at a news conference with President Trump about what had led to the change in thinking by a White House task force, Dr. Deborah Birx, one of the task force leaders, said new information had come from a model developed in Britain.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/16/us/coronavirus-fatality-rate-white-house.html?referringSource=articleShare
The report, which was linked in the previous thread, seems to be driving policy for both the UK and the US.

The economic consequences of these measures could be unlike anything we have ever seen in history. More and more I’m hearing the word “depression” being thrown around as opposed to “recession”. Don’t be shocked to see the unemployment rate hit 20-25% again, folks...

Australia send out money to citizens to stimulate the economy and they used it to avoid a significant recession in the past. It's based on the idea that you give money to the poorer groups because they spend their money and don't hoard it. The money then filters up through businesses for goods and services.

Re: Semi-OT: Coronavirus (COVID-19) Discussion Thread III (Info. Post 1)
The potential is there for a depression. The systematic issues that caused the 07-08 recession were not really fixed. The stock market was over inflated due to the fed and stock buybacks painting a rosy picture that flossed over the fact that 78% of the country lives pay check to pay check, inequality is rampant, debt was sky high, and this is a consumerism economy. It's propped up by people spending most of their earnings right away. Even a short term disruption in spending is disastrous, with this virus that disruption could be multiplied and rather quickly. That's why a swift and competent federal action is vital but the current group in charge seems more interested in helping their wealthy buddies than acting quickly to help the masses, thus why action has been slow. It's not a good sign and consider most everyone is just getting by when things are normal. Then adding that we don't manufacture that much and would be hard to start doing so, we get so much imported and supply lines are being thrown off course because other countries are struggling too with this virus, it's a double whammy.minnytola1960 wrote:The economic consequences of these measures could be unlike anything we have ever seen in history. Yep. Trump and Munchin just said "Obviously we don't wanna give it to millionaires". So it's good that they are being conscientious about giving it to those in need. Also like that both said the tax break idea takes too long, and they want American's getting help within 2 weeks. Munchin said Trump gave orders that this needs to be handled NOW, because Americans aren't at fault for this crises.zimpy27 wrote:Australia send out money to citizens to stimulate the economy and they used it to avoid a significant recession in the past. I'm curious the logistics of this operation. If 25% of people get laid off...that's A LOT of claims to process.

Really frustrated at work right now. Just unbelievable failure to mitigate spread. If the virus is here, it's being given an empty multi-lane highway to spread.
I work at a courthouse. To enter the building have to open a door. Chance to spread. Then have to go through scanner usually putting all metal items in a bucket which isn't sanitized so more chance to spread. Then choice of elevator or stairs. Stairs all the way for me and fortunately I only have to go to second floor. But to get out of the stairwell, I have to open another door, so another chance to spread. Finally get to the courtroom and at least there I can open the door with my key without touching the door, though I suppose the key might pick up the virus.
Inside the courtroom numerous people in close proximity. Last week an interpreter with a cough was there. Yesterday a poor court reporter had a witness five feet away directly facing her sniffling and occasionally coughing. Then when the witness was done, she sat five feet away from me.
The hallway outside the courtroom is full of people in close proximity. To get to the bathroom I feel like I'm walking a gauntlet, or if I have it and am fortunate enough to be asymptomatic, I'm walking by several people I could be passing it to.
Back inside the courtroom, the desk where I sit has had three other people sit there as well. More chance for spread.
Some of this is difficult to prevent, but there is absolutely more that could and should be done. I mentioned some to the judge yesterday. The courtroom is big enough for people to spread out, we just have to change some conventions. But it's basically business as usual for now.
I don't think we should shut down. I deal with dependency where children are separated from parents and we can't just sit on that stuff indefinitely, but carrying on without sensible adjustments is not the way to go.

Only 7 Players in NBA history have 21,000 points, 5,750 assists and 5,750 rebounds. LeBron has double those numbers.
