We're all human. I really don't understand why people feel the need to look for same race role models.

It gives people confidence that race doesn't have to prevent one from achieving a certain position in life.

That wasn’t his choice, they literally told him to leave. There were lots of whispers on why, but I won’t take this thread that direction.

Lin was a solid NBA player after being a huge underdog to even play at thar level. He has all my respect.

Random role player turned celebrity by way of an amazing hot streak in a major media market bolstered by identity appeal to an underrepresented demographic.
He parlayed that into a solid 10 yr journeyman career in the league.

His career on the court was pretty common by NBA standards but what he may be noted for most is his rabid fan base which contained some of the better, and notoriously some of the worst, elements of sports fandom.
The incessant conspiracy theories and blatant racism from some of Lin's more radical fans was most noticeable after his brief stint in New York. I witnessed them blame everyone from Melo, to Harden, to Beverley, to McHale, to Kobe for Lin not being an All-Star.

Perhaps the most unfortunate part was that their unrealistic expectations of him left them perpetually unsatisfied and unable to fully appreciate what turned out to be a pretty decent career.
Even now they still blame conspiracies for why a nearly 33 year old basketball vagabond, who looked virtually unplayable in his last NBA stint, hasn't landed a roster spot rather than celebrating his trailblazing career.

He's a good player....I think he can be a good 15th player tho

Melo basically just said Lin wasnt worth a big contract

How was it massively overblown? Any player, on any team, of any nationality would have got the same (if not more) attention.

22pts, 9 ast during a 12 game span as a starter. (Went 9-3). Including 38pts in a win over Kobe and the Lakers and a game winning buzzer beater in there as well.

136 points scored in his first five starts, the most by any player since the NBA and ABA merged in 1976.

What he did was great any day of the week.

But to do it with his background and under his circumstances was truly an epic moment in NBA history.

Personally, it's my favourite moment ever having watched the NBA for over 25 years. It's just such an unexpected and feel good story.

Dude went to Harvard and we're here trying to act like him being in the NBA is what should give people that look up to him confidence.

i'd cut Melo a little slack here... Melo might have meant how "ridiculous" the contract was structured, being back loaded, not necessarily meant the amount was ridiculous for Lin's stature... the real douche was JR, he piled on saying Lin's big earning created lock room resentment, but JR is a knucklehead anyway, he was actually the teammate who accompanied Lin in Lin's ESPY award ceremony... JR is a star ass licker...

Fits perfectly right where it is (and apparently touched the right people).

Thanks.

Revisionist history.
Lin took the money, as he should have.

Well I just look things up to make sure my memory wasn’t failing me. And the Knicks didn’t offer him a contract, and they didn’t match the contract Houston offered him. Yet they did give contracts to a 39 year old Jason Kidd and Ray Felton.

And the kicker was that Dolan was pissed that Lin didn’t give the Knicks a home team discount after they had given him his opportunity. But they never offered him even a discounted contract so basically they were upset that Lin’s agent was doing his job and finding a team that would offer his client a contract.

There were also rumors thar Carmelo didn’t want him back but those are tougher to prove.

Lin did take the money, but the Knicks definitely didn’t try very hard to retain him either.

Amare basically confirmed it. Plus the fact that Carmelo publicly commented on Lin's offer sheet and called it "ridiculous" is all the evidence you need. I don't know why it's still being debated at all.

I don't know if "overblown" is the word I'd use because it was a great story but Flip Murray had literally the same story but didn't get nearly the same attention.
Lin's racial identity definitely played a role in all the hype.

Melo and jr smith were jealous of the attention he got. amare admitted this a few years ago when he said some on the team were not happy with Lin’s success. In hindsight knicks should have traded all the anti Lin players and built around him
