They also have a very small chance of acquiring a player of Dame's caliber in the next decade as well unless we start seeing some deep top heavy drafts (true of all teams that blow it up).

I think the responses to this post will answer your question.

CJ + one or two protected 1st-round picks for Siakam, who it sounds like is gettable.

That's still not a contender and odds are, still a first round exit. Second round, tops.

i dont think cj mccollum can land us simmons, so they should try to land siakam and if thats not possible either, then they should settle for harris who should be available... harris probably isnt better player than cj mccollum, but hed be better fit and blazers starting five would be balanced, wed get forward and powell would move back to his natural position

Lol. We're just talking about making moves that tangibly improve the team, i.e., moves that would placate Dame. There's flat-out no way for the Blazers to become a contender. Dame himself is not good enough to be the best player on a championship team (outside of scenarios in which POR has freakier injury luck than the Bucks and Suns had this summer).

If Olshey's plan is to not do anything unless it results in an absolute, bona-fide contender, then he should just focus on trading Dame for the best package he can.

Are you a Raptors fan? I'd have to imagine that every Blazers fan would agree on that deal, but I have a hard time seeing the Raptors sign off on that.

Honestly it may be a bit of an overpay by Portland. It really depends on if/how broken the relationship is with TOR & Siakam. Statistically CJ was the superior player last year (RPM, Raptor, you name it...), and it's not particularly close. Size & Age are what Siakam has on CJ.. I am not sure that gap is 2 firsts...

Honestly, I just think the CJ in TOR fit is bad... It would make more sense in a 3-way deal with CJ going elsewhere.

Yeah, CJ is not a fit in TOR; I was suggesting it more as an asset play, since I have to imagine TOR recognizes that they probably aren't competing for much of anything this year. The idea would be to trade Siakam for CJ and net some draft assets, then find a taker for CJ to net more assets (picks and/or youth). Could be a 3-teamer from the outset, or maybe TOR waits till the deadline when some team feels like they're one CJ McCollum away from whatever their goal is.

(And for the record, I'm a neutral fan here (Warriors), so I may be off on the trade balance. Point is more just that (1) Siakam seems available, (2) swapping CJ for Siakam would unquestionably improve the Blazers on the court, and (3) the Blazers seem to have the raw ammo to get a deal done if they really wanted, since they have all their picks and the delta between CJ and Siakam is not enormous.)

Excluding Dame the only valuable asset the Blazers have is CJ and draft picks.

Who can the Blazers trade CJ + Picks for to make them a contender and how many picks will it take?

Simmons, Siakam, Tobias Harris, Paul George?

Blazers won't do this until he asks out but the move is trade Dame for Simmons + all the Sixers future picks and pick swaps or a better futures offer if you can find it elsewhere. CJ or a package for CJ isn't getting you over the hump. Nurkic is hurt too often to be valuable in trade. If you wait until Dame gets old it's going to be so much harder.

Although I'm happy that Norm got paid, sheesh what a mess of a roster. They are going to pay ~92.5m next season for 3 guards that are 6'2-6'3.

CJ with his massive contract is not that valuable of an asset that Portland fans or the organization are banking on.

I actually think they have a pretty good shot. I'd say a large majority of the teams in the league have had a Dame level player over the last decade.

The gm said clear as day the roster wasnt the problem in the exit interviews. Head in the sand. Superstar wants upgrades and ur still insisting the roster is good. Then when he has no choice but to request out ur gonna act shocked.

Clown.

CJ should have been traded like 4 years ago. He was never the right sidekick to Lillard. Things always go well when you are like half a decade late to the party lol

I wondered the same thing as OP until I found out he’s a former soap opera actor, then it all made sense.

No way that’s a fair trade! Portland would have to add at least 5 first round picks for Simmons according to Morey

making their owners money by making the playoffs while staying out of the luxury tax if possible and never reaching the repeater tax. They're the Celtics of the west. As long as fans keep supporting this they have no need to change and honestly, couldn't be doing much better besides making the Finals and winning a championship. But to do that, it usually requires paying luxury tax so it's essentially a wash.

The owner is a philanthropist not a basketball fan

Chances that she pours money into the Blazers are remote

More likely that she sells as Paul Allen’s foundation would make a massive profit
