OP is on to something. I’ve made this comparison for RJ in the past before. His size and tenacious defense make him comparable to Butler. And sure, he can’t playmake at Butlers level yet, but he already shoots the 3 ball better than Butler ever has.

Who averaged around 22 ppg with elite defense is out of the question for a 21 year old when last year at 20 he averaged nearly 18 a game? The man had no offensive game until he was 25 years oldcelticfan42487 wrote:Not in the slightestthe disrespect RJ gets is amazing
Out of question, its a strange comparison, Jimmy is a hard defender, very engaged and plays with a lot od effort, he is a hub offensively, outside Lebron he might be the best wing passer alongside DeRozan in the last couple of seasons, he thrives attacking the rim because he cant shoot, dude still getting a lot of calls because he is a fearless attacker.
Evolution isnt linear, he is an example, a lot of guys that were better in the beginning of his carreer arent better today, guys develop differently. Players are coming younger every year, we cant expect them to develop like guys that were entering the league 22, 23 years old. At some point we stop adding knowledge and improving. The biggest difference in my opinion is that the guys that develop faster into a star will be a finished product in all their physical primes, not saying they stop to add tools to their games, but its imposible to expect big leaps every single year just because the guy is young

You think RJ won’t develop by the time Butler came into the league he won’t have develop a much better offensive game? Jimmy was barley averaging 13 ppg in his third season at 24 years old.rate_ wrote:HELL NO
RJ is nowhere near a one on one talent. RJ is very limited as a ball handler and playmaker. He is strictly 3 and D. Jimmy is an offensive hub. And Herro > RJ. 65.4% of RJ's FG makes are assisted.
I know you’re a Heat fan but man sheeshthere a lot going for RJ just in his third season
RJ has played a lot more basketball and trained more than butler though, so its hard to say he will improve as much as jimmy who hasnt had access to world class training from birth like rj did.

RandlesCornrows wrote:Roll their eyes because a third overall pick is one of the best players on a very very good team at 21 years old? Its just a comparison of a third overall pick to a star player, who is showing out especially when Barrett is one of the most disrespected player in the league.bisme37 wrote:OP, it's early in the season and most fans are focused on their own teams, so most of us likely haven't even seen RJ play much yet. Also, Butler is balling out right now so the timing of this thread is bad in that regard too.
If Barrett is indeed playing like Butler, give it some time for people to see it for themselves and then bring it up later in the season or something. Right now people are just going to roll their eyes, fairly or not.
In order to be the next Butler, RJ needs to get to the FT line much more and have a better FG% along with the defense.
Last year looked promising, but RJ is starting off slow this year. Butler can get to the FT line at a 7-9 clip a game while having a FG% over 45 along with the defense.

I'm just hoping he won't be a bust.

Even if he had, that wouldn't mean RJ being further ahead at age 21 would mean he'd still be ahead at age 28. Players have different development arcs that are all unique to them, even when compared to similar players with similar backgrounds. That's why precocity is very diffferent than potential.

Hard to really see him since he's on the knicks which are just not on the radar for me. But I saw some elements in college.

RJ isn’t so much a 3 and D guy. Yes his 3 pt shooting has increased but he can drive to the rim with the best of them. RJ had thrown down some of the most thunderous dunks since his rookie season.

He’ll no different body types and game styles. I see a more ranged Wiggins than a Butler though. Butler is mad efficient with not even a great jumper. If he did he’d a be a smaller Kawhi with better facilitating skills.
Li WenWen is the GOAT

No not at all. He still could become a good player in this league though.

RJ reminds me more of Caron Butler than Jimmy.

Just want him to arrive offensively, barely any shots to go around
