This narrative that JBB is the guy who is mainly responsible for this needs to stop already. If you polled Cavs fans on RealCavsFans - who are watching virtually every game - the vast majority would not agree that he deserves COTY.
People need to stop overly simplifying this conversation to who’s the coach of the team that surprised people the most this year and actually start talking about the offensive and defensive systems, rotations, coaching decisions, and game plans that these guys are responsible for.
I know how I saw the Cavs play basketball prior to JBB and how they look now (because I watch every game). Even pre-dating LeBron I have never seen the Cavs run as much motion and ball movement as they do on offense under JBB, not to mention the defensive intensity they play with on a nightly basis that has never happened since the Finals rosters.
He is also the coach responsible for starting 3 bigs and making it work into a playoff team when everybody said they were idiots. Hes has gotten the entire team into passing the ball and away from ISO offense. He has gotten UDFAs like Stevens/Wade to look like good NBA level rotation players.
He also made hard roster changes with decreasing the roles of both Cedi/Love and got them to buy into that system and they are having the best years they have both had in 5 seasons and Love looks like a 6 MOY candidate.
Sorry but what he has done with this roster, who were projected to be the worst team in the NBA to where they are now--is far more impressive than Spolstra getting the Heat to be the exact team people expected them to be heading into this year. Making a good team that just went to the Finals 2 years ago perform good is not nearly as impressive as taking the team with the worst W/L record in the past 3 years combined to the 5th seed. They are also doing it without Sexton who is a top 4 player on their roster so thats another hurdle they had to jump/coach over.
