Gobert won’t win it this year as he hasn’t done enough to clearly separate himself from the rest of the pack especially considering he’s won it 3 times already.

While I agree he's having more of a "down" year for himself defensively, who has really stepped up to take it away? Probably would've went to Draymond with the path he and GS were on, but now that he's missed so much time that's pretty much out the window and no one else has really stepped up to make a claim to it. Rudy is still favored to win it over the entire field: https://www.vegasinsider.com/nba/odds/defensive-player-of-the-year/

True, no one clearly stands out as the favourite, 5-6 candidates that aren’t separated by much, it’s up for grabs, last quarter of the season will be crucial.

To win DPOY, you have to have get voters excited enough about you to not vote for Gobert.

Gobert is the default pick and the dominant defensive force of his era. Draymond is as well, but like everyone is saying, he's played 34 games and wont crack 50 this year.

There is Gobery ennui, and voters would happily hop on anyone's DPOY bandwagon. But I don't see it this season. Especially with how Utah's defense has cratered horrifically whenever Gobert has missed games. Voters are very swayed by that kind of thing.

I think a lot of the best defense this year is being played by stacked defensive teams with good systems
Boston: Time Lord, Smart, Tatum, Brown, Horford, Grant Williams
Miami: Bam, Lowry, Butler, PJ
Phoenix: Bridges, Paul, Ayton, always having a rim protector out there.
Cleveland: Triple big lineups with Allen and Mobley
Dallas: Maxi Kleber is so underrated, DFS is very good.
Clippers: The wing armada
Golden State: still leading the league in defensive rating despite Draymond being out.

Just none of these guys have as strong a solo credit as Gobert has. If he wasn't so disliked by players and boring to voters, I'd say he should be unanimous this year.

And guys, I love Jokic as much as anyone, and I do think he's a good defender... but the NBA voters are not giving Jokic this award lol. No matter what the stats say.

Time lord is a good shout. Boston's defense has been out of this world in 2022 and it could be a way to reward the whole team.

So Draymond is aiming for a Monday return. If he plays out the remainder of the season, that will give him 58 games on the season. Let's assume that he gets 3 rest games, so 55 games on the year.

He was the clear DPOY favourite before getting injured, and GSW have fallen off rather considerably with him out.

Would 55 games be sufficient for him to still win DPOY?

Gobert is such a fake DPOY. Each playoffs he gets exposed that his defensive abilities are very limited and he's almost played off the floor. Probably one of the most overrated DPOY guys in recent memory.

Draymond was running away with this until the injury.
I'm gonna go with Giannis (bigger workload without Brook), Gobert (a mainstay) and then Smart or Timelord.

Which advanced metrics do you mean? Overall, I wouldn't feel swayed by that on its own. As Miami's main backline defender, regardless of what scheme Miami is running, his iso skills feels like the least important part of his game. Miami has monster iso defender (Jimmy, PJ), Bam needs to be anchor who guards the whole floor.

To be clear: I have no problem with Miami fans (or anyone) saying Bam. Bam is an awesome defender. Such versatile physical gifts (best blend of quicks, strength, and hops in the league), super tough mentality, very disciplined. I do think Bam has a bit of a ceiling when he runs into bigger, more athletic players. He'll trash a small ball lineup and then look a little more human against guys like Embiid, Jokic, Ayton, Giannis etc.

Regardless, Bam should be near the top of the DPOY conversation every year.

As long as he doesn't get exposed in the regular season, then he should win this regular season award.

Looks like a 2 man race between Gobert and Bam.

Gobert 1.90x
Bam 3.5x

Bam went from 11x just a month ago to 3.5x. Feel like Bam will get it due to voter fatigue with Gobert.

they haven't really fallen off on defense though. if anything, them playing out of their minds and going 18-2 vs the early easy schedule should give you pause with draymond, since he wasn't being tested later on in the season, while steph was struggling and the ínjuries piled on
