Boston has the #1 defense in the league. Williams is their best defender, not Smart. But Smart will get the votes.
This. Williams is the best defender by far.

The Smart campaign since Rob went down is...odd. The best defender on the best defense went down...Smart, the second best defender remains, and the Celtics defense doesn't look nearly as good without Rob...so reward the next best guy?

Gobert.

My 1st team

Gobert
Giannis
Mikal
Smart
Dejounte

2nd Team

Timelord
JJJ
Draymond
Thybulle
Jrue.

I dunno if Bam makes the number of required games? But huge snub though.

Smart. Even Rob Williams said Smart should win. His constant communication doesn't get recognized but he is their best defender. Take nothing away from Rob because he is a beast and does things that nobody else in the league can do.

Change the award to Defensive Team of the Year.

Add a 3rd team for NBA All-Defense.

Nobody was expecting Memphis to be that competitive and JJJ is a key component of their defense

JJJ

He protects the paint but he also is able to slow guys like Giannis and Durant one on one.

Defense just isn't as valuable as offense and is more a team-based achievement
look at Dallas, no elite defensive players but a very good defensive team.
Given that I think its right it isn't as acknowledged as the offensive side.

Went with Bam/JJJ strictly because you cant keep passing the DPOY between the same 2-3 guys. The NBA loves to promote new players and try to make them into stars for marketing their product.

I could see this year being the one where they say give it to a random player like Bam/JJJ and leave Rudy/Green/Giannis out of it.

It's still Gobert, but due to voter fatigue, I think it'll go to BAM or JJJ.

There are a lot of games where people post the stats of how many shots different guys made with Smart guarding them, and those numbers add up to approximately zero. The Celtics' defense also first got elite this season when Smart returned from injury, IIRC.

So Smart would not be a crazy choice.

But I am somewhat amazed by how hard he's campaigning for the award. I don't recall anything else like that in the era of social media. (Jordan campaigned hard too, but the media world was very different then.)

Marcus Smart needs is a nickname as catchy and widespread as “Glove”. Since 1989, only one guard has been named Defensive Player of the Year, and that guard was nicknamed Glove. So, science tells me Smart should also get a nickname as catchy as glove.

And if you can't defend the perimeter too, you shouldn't be DPOY anymore
.

Then if you cant guarding the paint, you shouldn't be DPOY either.

You think smart or bridges can't guard his man in the paint?

They cant guard a centre in the paint no. Just like Gobert cant keep up with guards on the outside.

it's actually Bam Adebayo, holds opponents to a lower FG% overall than Giannis, Bridges, Marcus Smart, defends from anywhere. Miami have a top 5 defense and a defensive identity and he's a huge part of why.

Take a look at the difference:

I’m looking forward to the playoffs, where a finally healthy Embiid can stop worrying about competing for the regular season MVP and its emphasis of scoring, and return expending unrestricted energy to the defensive end. That’s when his +/- goes nuts.
