He surely won't help with the elite guards in the conference.

You don't think that shutting down the paint against non-shooters like Butler or Giannis will be useful in the playoffs?

He did cover for both of them, not sure what you mean? I believe the thinking is that he will cover for Trae and teams in the east are less likely to play him off the floor in the playoffs because of the quality of the bigs on the top teams here. Trae will also be better at getting him easy looks at the rim. If they can also get Grant to be the second scorer beside Trae, that can be a pretty special core: Trae/Grant/Gobert.

Right now, Utah can be rid of Gobert's insane contract, so they must act, because Gobert's value won't increase after this off-season.

Gobert's Contract:
$38,172,414
$41,000,000
$43,827,587
$46,655,173 (Player Option

I am admittedly a Jazz homer, so feel free to take my post with a whole container of salt

But yeah, some weird takes in this thread.
- the OP says "some combination of", not all of it. Obviously Utah isn't getting all of that.
- Rudy Gobert is a much better player than Clint Capela. Much better. And I like Capela. If Atlanta wants the upgrade, it's going to cost a lot more than just Gallinari.
- if Trae is so bad that even Gobert can't help, that sounds like a Trae problem. Why even bother playing defense, then? Just trade Capela for a shooting wing and hope you can win some 152-140 games.
- the East has some really good bigs. The only thing that has ever really slowed Giannis down, for instance, is putting very tall men on him (Horford, Gasol/Ibaka, Embiid, etc.) Just because Gobert can't stop Tatum (who can?) doesn't mean he can't help.

Anyway, I'd never suggest that Gobert is perfect or that teams don't have any reason to be wary. He's not and they do.

He is, however, one of the best centres in the league, and you're not going to be getting any of the ones better than him. Some teams should still be interested, and Atlanta would seem to be one of them.

Gobert for Collins+Capela seems fair IMO

Ressler can't be looking at salary and not have multiple doubts. Schlenk has addressed flexibility and that is the ultimate non flexible salary.

That's just in terms of a salary dump, let alone the value being given up.

Hawks should definitely look to consolidate a few of their pieces for an upgrade, but I think that's a bit too much for Gobert. If they can get him for something centered around Capela, Huerter & picks then I think it's an easier trigger to pull.

I like Gobert and think his deficiencies are a little overblown, but his contract is hideous and guys like him don't tend to age very well. I could see him becoming another Westbrook/Wall type of contract in just a couple years or so.

Think the Hawks would be better served trying to get Ayton for something centered around Collins. Fits the Hawks timeline and still has a lot of potential to take an extra step up. If I had to spend $150M on Ayton or Gobert for the next four years, I'm easily going with Ayton.

Mitchell and Trae are both terrible defenders, but the difference is that unlike Mitchell, Trae will get Gobert a ton of wide open dunk opportunities. That alone could result in Gobert being a little more understanding of Trae's bad defense than he was for Mitchell.

Getting Capella n Collins would be cool for Utah. They need some wing defense tho

I think it's Capella/Collins and that's it. MAYBE the #16 gets put in, or the future Char pick. Anything more, and I say no

If I'm Utah, I'd really need to consider that.

and the 16th in this draft. Gobert for Collins + Capela + 16th then call it a day.

And in the East, Gobert is less likely to be played off the floor in the postseason since he'd matchup well opposite elite bigs like Embiid, Giannis, Adebayo and Siakam.
nobody played Rudy off the floor...

I do think Trae and Gobert has great potential but it is very big risk if you don't have a very deep pocketed and committed owner.
Rudy is at a pretty normal 30% max, he didn't get the full supermax

I’d rather go for Ayton if I’m Atlanta — he’s like 7 years younger & fits their timeline much better.

You may be technically right because of years in service I guess but in the end Gobert is making 38 and up from there and Trae is making 36 million next season. They will make 90+ million combined in a few years.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….
