Re: Was Stockton ahead of his time with the short shorts?
Tbh, I think the Stockton style shorts were too short. And seems restricting and too tight. I don't get why the league went from that to the really baggy style though. It seems like there was no transition period.
Anyways, I think the shorts most players were today are more practical. Shorts before were too baggy. The shorts now are like soccer shorts. I don't consider them "short shorts". I definitely don't consider them booty shorts.

And I think the reason that players started to reverse over time up to today is because it wasn't really practical, especially in the 00s when it went overboard with how baggy things were. If you're working out or exercising intensely you want your clothes to be as light as possible. It's crazy to think how thick the material used to be for basketball shorts in the late 90s and 00s and how much it's improved over time.
I dunno man, a bit more length and thickness isn't a bad thing when you fall...
I didn't think about that. Seems like sliding on hardwood floor would be more bearable with those baggy shorts than the more soccer-style shorts today.

Yeah, playing on blacktop, the longer thicker shorts were WAY more forgiving.

Re: Was Stockton ahead of his time with the short shorts?
It's been mentioned, but Stockton wasn't ahead of his time. Short shorts were still the style when he came into the league. Stockton just never changed his style.
I was born in 1980 and I remember short shorts were the style up until around the very late 80's. Late 80's/early 90's is when style kind of transitioned into baggy shorts being the trend. If you were wearing short shorts in like 1988 or 1989 it was still cool, but if you were still wearing short shorts in 1991 you would be getting clowned.....lol. That's how I remember it.
90's style was perfect IMO, baggy but not too baggy. A bit loose fitting and just a bit below the knee. The very late 90's/early 2000's was terrible, way too baggy. Clothing style in general was terrible in that time period, and I thought it was terrible at the time and I was still my early 20's, so it's not like I was some old guy just yelling at the clouds. I remember being 21 and thinking, this is awful, why is this becoming the trend?? Grown men looking like 7 year olds wearing their dad's clothes. That era style wise can be summed up in those pictures of TJ Ford from 2003.

The short answer is "no, he wasn't ahead of his time, he just never left his own time."

No. Fashion is cyclical. It's inevitable that fashion will change but everything's already been done so inevitably, retro is always going to become contemporary again. Just a matter of what's retro at any given time.

I think they're too tight today to be fully honest, but not to the point it matters, AKA looks mostly like style. As long as the shorts aren't past the knee or darn near nut huggers...I doubt it has any impact. That said I like more room all else equal...

I'm pretty sure the Fab 5 gets credit for the change in basketball, not sure about elsewhere.

Re: Was Stockton ahead of his time with the short shorts?
i wonder how people will look back on this era of shorts and how a bunch of players have compression shorts on that are longer than their uniform shorts. plus there's a bunch of guys that wear leg sleeves or full-on leggings.
and yeah... i consider short shorts to be like they wore in the 60's where they look almost like briefs. i'd say most times shorts have been more or less the same length they are now.
don't let a brief time in the late 90s/early 2000s fool you!

I remember at one point in the late 80s/early 90s that guys like Jordan and Barkley were doing that and it almost seemed like they forced the league's hand to make shorts longer cause the compression shorts were so noticeable.

Before the Fab 5 was Michael Jordan. You know how in Space Jam he said he wore a pair of his North Carolina shorts under his shorts for every NBA game? That was true, and he wasn't allowed to show the North Carolina shorts, so he had to wear longer shorts with the Bulls.

I partly blame the AND1 tour for the baggy style getting out of hand, and that TJ Ford pic is the pinnacle of ridiculousness.

It's too bad it's not on youtube, but there was that time when Shaq and some other players got fined by the league for wearing shorts that the league deemed too long. Shaq protested this and said there was no way in hell he was wearing any kind of "John Stockton shorts". Then as a joke, Stockton actually mailed a pair of his uniform Jazz shorts to Shaq.
Shaq opened up the package and put Stockton's on in the locker room and walked around. Hilarity ensued. Again, it's too bad that nobody recorded this and saved it on youtube.

Re: Was Stockton ahead of his time with the short shorts?
Back in high school i wore skinny jeans before they were popular... We had to go to the girls section and buy girls pants to get skinny jeans... Funny to think about that now cuz skinny jeans are popular now.
