I thought Rubio would be a really good player, once he would become a 33-34% 3P shooter before the ACL injury. Like 15/5/10 kinda guy with good defense.

CP3 after his knee injury in 2010 became significintly less explosive and had to alter his playstyle. Still a great career, obviously, but he could have been even better.

We had a sample of what Andrei Kirilenko could have been without back issues, and it was a lot of fun. Still went on to be a very good player.

This was the first name that sprang to mind, but strictly speaking, the OP was about players who the public didn't really realize just how much injuries curtailed their careers. I think it's very well-known how much injury hobbled G.Hill, and what he could have been (considering how great he still was).

Going back aways, the next name popping to mind for me is Arvydas Sabonis.
Talking about Portland's GM (Whitsitt) at the time he finally came over Illustrating the impact of Sabonis' numerous injuries, Whitsitt recalled in a 2011 interview, that when the doctor reported the results, "He said that Arvydas could qualify for a handicapped parking spot, based on the X-ray alone."

DJ Augustin.
Charlotte shocked everyone when they picked him instead of Brook Lopez while already having Kemba and no decent bigs.
DJ had a very fruitful rookie campaign showing nice chemistry with Waller before the leg injury shortened his season. After it he became a pedestrian career backup PG.

Gordon Hayward. There was a point in time he was better than Jimmy Butler and Paul George.

Yeah I may be off but I took the OP meaning the player had shown he was going to be great not necessarily had shown they were already great like Grant or even Penny etc or a D Rose who'd won an MVP.
That's why I went with Paul George.
He'd shown he could be great and was on his way to being the next big superstar then outta nowhere comes James Harden in Houston Yr 1 who quickly shot up the player rankings and George became a second banana again as far as best SG.
During this time it was Kobe Wade Manu Klay PG and Harden fighting for that title and clearly Wade and Bean were at the end of their careers.

He was damn good but I'm not sure he was on a HOF trajectory. He came in to the league at 22 years old for one. To his credit he became an all star in his 2nd year in the league but during that time you had Kobe and DWade who were by far the 2 best SGs in the league but then you could argue Joe Johnson was just as good or close to Brandon Roy. JJ was leading the Hawks to the playoffs year after year and balling out too. I think Roy would of had a similar type career as JJ. In fairness there are people that argue that JJ should also be in the HOF

Reggie Lewis RIP. Jordan said nobody played tougher D on him than Lewis.
Some other good names here too.
People obviously know KG well but how different he was esp on offense before and after 09 isn’t that well recognized.

Larry Johnson.
He went on to have a much diminished, but productive role on the Knicks after his injuries when he reshaped the type of player he was, but he could have been so much more had his career trajectory not been derailed due to his back issues.
He was well on his way to becoming a more explosive version of Charles Barkley.
