This is a very strange rule that I can only guess exists solely for the benefit of airing more commercials.
And I think this also explains what happened: The refs called a Mavs timeout, but since no one on the Mavs actually called for a timeout, everyone interpreted the ref pointing to the Mavs bench as correcting the out of bounds ruling and probably just assumed the stoppage was an official timeout.
Personally it did look like the ball was off Looney at a glance, so I can understand the confusion by the team especially since the announcer apparently called it wrong too.

Would be absurd considering the Warriors gave up an uncontested 3 at the end because they were up by 5 with 1.7 seconds to go.

The bottom line is that the officials got it right, and it was the Mavs and their announcers that were confused. The officials should have cleared things up, but it's not as bad as an *actual* missed call, which there were many of during the game.

The league won’t do anything at all. They will either come out with a statement that says our bad or just say get over it losers

As a Warriors fan, I have seen Draymond walking away from a play and results in a turnover. Also multiple inbound passes thrown to Klay's back and ends up in a turnover. These Mavs make me feel pretty good about my Warriors. The collective level of brain farting is unmatched.

Lol you cant be serious. This happened with 2 minutes left in the third quarter, each team had like 20 possessions after that. It would be like calling a football game a tie because the refs blew a first down call in the third quarter, or challenging the outcome of a game because the refs missed a shooting foul in the third quarter. The Warriors also went up 5 with one second left, it only ended up a 2 point game because Bullock made a three at the buzzer when the game was already over. There’s no argument that this was the difference in the game.

I can’t believe the commentators talked about it for 30+ minutes just berating the refs. So unprofessional. JVG was on one tonight.

For anyone that knows basketball or basic ref hand signals it was clear that first the ref called the ball as Warriors ball. Then the second hand motion was pointing toward Mavs bench for the timeout call by Jason Kidd. Dallas just dummies and were on the wrong side after the timeout the refs said no mercy rules cuz we’re not in little kid basketball gave the Dubs the ball and they scored the layup.

There was a clear misunderstanding, Looney himself went to argue with the ref that the out of bounds should be in Ws favour.
Anyway, there are 10 assistant coaches on Mavs bench, and it's their responsibility to catch these things, but it's been this kind of season for the Mavericks...

The Mavs simply mistook the ref's timout call for the possession call, which the ref had already made.

Kidd didn't confirm possession with the refs(it seems like Dallas might have been relying on the announcers, lol), goofed and called an offensive play, and the Warriors profit.

The ref made the initial calls correctly.

That said, it was a dick move by the ref to just hand the ball to Draymond for the free Warriors basket. When the teams lined up at opposite ends and it was obvious Dallas was confused, the ref should have alerted the Mavs and given them a few extra seconds to get set up.

Maybe Luka's chirping got under the ref's skin and he just wanted to say FU to Dallas without getting anything technically wrong.

I'm not sure what the official rules say about protocal in situations like that, but in my experience the refs will usually give teams the benefit of the doubt and give them a few extra seconds to get set up.
