The ceiling is higher for tall guys, but if a small puts it together more than the bigs in a given season, it doesn't matter. Yeah, there are versatile bigs, but do you really think that would mean a guy like prime Curry couldn't win over them?

What a weird thing to say when Luka is a top 5 MVP contender

Small guards are being phased out almost entirely just due to how exploitable they are on defense, just like lumbering bigs. But Haliburton, SGA, Maxey, Edwards, Lamelo etc could get in the MVP race pretty easily.

I still think this is overstated. I can see someone with superhuman offensive abilities a la Steph 2015-2017 winning the award provided they are a smidge above average defensively

If the production is very close, guards are going to get the nod over a big. They'll get some pound for pound credit, same as they do for DPOY.

Doubt there will be another 2015-17 Steph any time soon

Harden won as recently as 2018, Westbrook before that, and two years of Steph prior to that.

If anything, we're in a period where we have a lot of high-end bigs, sure... but that's how talent cycles work. Embiid, Jokic, Giannis. You look at who is dominating the league and they tend to compete year in and year out. That doesn't mean a given position CAN'T win the MVP.

Others have mentioned SGA, Haliburton is making some big waves, Luka is technically a guard, we'll see how things go. The basic premise of this thread is a little aggressive and unlikely.

Don't agree with this, NBA just has an unusual glut of versatile big men in Jokic/Giannis/Embiid but there is a plenty of talent/production out on the wing.

Remember a few years ago when every casual fan thought the center position was going to be phased out of the league in favor of small ball?

WestBrook and Harden didn’t both win the MVP?

We have 3 big men that are MVP candidates but only one of them is a a true center- Jokic and Giannis are big men that initiate the offense like guards...

That was like 5-7 years ago man.... ancient times!
