I dont see the issue. It's very similar to winning the NCAA championship.

NBA lucked out that the lakers with all their title banners are the ones able to lead the charge here. Takes the pressure off every other team who will do the same if they win their own IST.

This has Adam Silver written all over it. Lakers don't even celebrate WCF championships! You want me to believe they will celebrate this?

Did I over-estimate the Lakers organization?

Agree that the commish must have forced them to this. It diminishes their legitimate banners.

IMO in a 30-team league in which some fans will never see their team win, having something else to celebrate does not seem that big of a deal to me.

Other sports seem just fine celebrating divisional titles, regular season accolades, etc. even if they all know the Larry OB / Super Bowl / Stanley Cup / etc. is the "biggest" prize.

In reality, the playoffs are already a gimmick. It is just a gimmick we are familiar with and used to.

I like that they're doing it that way. It's a great event (the knockout rounds), and fun for the fans, a better way to breakup the season than that crap all star weekend (which is only good because it gives the players rest).

The Lakers giving it the single banner that could be added to is a smart way to do it, and I see no reason why not try to respect the accomplishment for what will be a great additional event for the league ongoing. Does it make them favorites or anything? No, because it's single elimination, and the group play qualifications is stupid. But, still an accomplishment, even if it is a bit of a fake accomplishment.

I know other teams are going to take it more seriously in seasons to come because it puts you on a national stage for a week.
I would have loved to have seen some of the heavier hitting contenders on that stage.

Ok so now the Lakers doing all this is meme worthy if this tournament doesnt catch on..

Imagine if the winner next year is just like "cool, thanks for the money."

On the other hand, you have a 1 in 30 chance of winning this tournament.. Some teams may never win it in our lifetime.

Which is why I'm sure Silver made them hang a banner and had all the champagne ready for the players locker room,etc. The Lakers winning the first one is the best possible outcome for this tournament. Literally. Maybe other than the defending champions winning it.

There's no way the Lakers hang a banner and Denver/Miami/Indiana/Phoenix/Dallas wins in 2024 and doesn't follow suit.
