In the NBA you get a 3rd step called a gather step, where by rule they don't count the step that occurs with the gather. However, even that lax rule gets enforced laxly, like here, so you can gather and then take 3 steps so long as the first step occurs reasonably soon after the gather.

You forgot about 4th gather and elevensies.

We've had multiple threads on this. But this is how the gather step actually works. I can provide FIBA examples later, but these videos show how the rules actually work in real life.

Not sure if it was intentional, but solid word play

Traveling has not been called in the NBA for as long as I've been watching, you're just calling our your Father for doing it. Merry Xmas, it's a joke.

I feel like this play dirties up the NBA a lot, but you pretty much can't call it on technicality in real time. I watched it 5 times on replay, and still can't even tell whether it's travel. But yeah, I really hate watching this type of play when I'm at the gym. Don't know if it's travel, can't even call it if it is.

It never confused me till I seen Harden make a career out of taking like 3 gather steps it's absolutely ridiculous hahaha

You can’t travel with a live dribble.

The definition of a dribble dictates that it is a travel, but because those calls can be so close the refs these days allow the first foot to land after the ball has returned to the player's hand without considering it in regards to what happens next.

In reality, we know it's by the rules 100% a travel because the ball returns to his hand before that first foot hits the floor, but they don't call it anymore. And ofc he sneaks in the extra toe tap to rhythm up for the stepback. It's ann obvious travel in basically every way.

It's still 3 steps. You're right that people don't seem to understand that you can dance around like Ali while the dribble is live, but that ball returns to his hand after it kinda gets away from him and 3 footfalls later he dunks it. Travel.

Step backs confuse people because we see using gather steps going forward as having different rules than going backwards, so when players go backwards doing the same things they do forwardz we get weirded out.

Ater he gathers the ball, he takes two steps, nothing really exciting on this one.

I went down this rabbit hole and confused myself... but basically Gen Z doesn't believe in traveling violations.

Giannis did it in 4, when it took Brewer 5.
