It's the NFL that is sucking.

The quality of the product is all an all time low. The NFL changes their rules to make their stars look good. The NBA is constantly being pestered to change their rules so that their stars look bad.

You sound like a jealous little brother    Everyone knows that's not true.

The NFL moved the default offense starting point 10 yards forwards, making it way easier to move into scoring range.

Then they changed the overtime rules so that offenses could get another shot at winning the game. A change made specifically because of Mahomes.

Then they changed tackle rules to make playing defense harder as any "wrong" tackle results in a huge penalty.

All of these changes (and more) were made to help NFL offenses.

Meanwhile, NBA "fans" want rule changes because the players have become too good. Wemby is bombing logo 3s at 7'3. That is not because of any recent rule change. It's because Wemby is really talented and far better than his predecessors.

Everything you just spewed out about NFL is non-sense. They moved the default starting point to entice kick-off returns as that was becoming a lost part of the game. They changed the OT rules to give each teams a fair chance on offense, not just the team who wins the coin toss which was just dumb. And they are penalizing "drop tackles" because that type of tackles were resulting in player injuries. These changes seem reasonable to me, unlike the NBA which the rule changes over the last two decades have heavily favored the offense and basically neutered physicality.

You can think whatever you want, and I'm not going to bother arguing back and forth since this is an NBA forum thus most of posters here are heavily biased towards it, but people in general favor NFL over NBA and the gap is only becoming wider.

Not sure who invented it, about a decade ago, the Packers (Rodgers) and the Broncos (Peyton Manning) ran this pick play where two receivers cross each other, the DBs would naturally not have a chance to defend; for that split second, the receiver on top is open. This play works wonder on shortage yardage situation. The NFL outlawed it. They are very open to rule changes if certain players keep exploiting them.

The NFL will ban the QB fake slide eventually

those numbers are misleading imo

interest in the NBA (and viewership) may be dwindiling in the U.S compared to the NFL but internationally the NFL holds very little appeal and the NBA is exploding. money wise, advertisers wise, merchandise wise - does it really matter if the ppl paying for the product are from Europe, China or the states?

Season ticket sales are a huge part of how individual franchises make money, so to answer your question yes it does matter since fans in Latvia aren't in a position to drive revenue the same way for teams as domestic fans are.

That being said, I don't see any compelling evidence that NBA attendance actually is in decline right now. But if and when it gets to that point it's definitely going to be time to hit the panic button a little bit, regardless of how many Slovenians are rushing out to buy Luka jerseys.

The NFL isn't a three point spam fest with guys who sit out all the time, so they got that going for them.

What does that have to do with the NFL not being good? The ratings are the highest it’s ever been even though the league is the worst it’s ever been.
And yet far more people are choosing to watch that over NBA. That's says a lot about the NBA.

People are sheep is what best explains it.

More people probably watch the Super Bowl for the commercials over the game and the commercials have been trash for years now. But they’ve been coerced into believing it’s something socially relevant so it continues on like a pointless habit.

I work with a couple of guys who think the NFL product is trash now but it gives them a chance to sit around with their buddies, drink, and get away from their wives for a Sunday. I would say don’t let the ratings fool you. Sure lots of long timers complain just like basketball purists who are sick of 3’s will complain.

Saw the score of the second NFL game was 27-3 or something. That sounds like some boring **** to me.

Same. I am happy for NFL fans that they get more games during the holidays. There's billions of people on this planet and plenty of sport to go around.

Live and let live.

In terms of quality of games NBA couldn't have asked for a better day. Much needed too given all the bad press this season.

The change their jerseys every year to increase jersey sales - I never see anyone wearing jerseys.

They sign huge multi billion dollar tv deals - ratings are down and many don’t have cable or watch the games.

Clippers build a brand new state of the art arena - attendance is nearly half empty.

Do hot takes by sports personalities and Tik tok highlight reals really generate income? Because that’s the only place I see the NBA thriving. Talking points and highlight clips. And franchise valuations of course.

Yea their obsession with jerseys is stupid. Most adults don't wear jerseys anymore. They've gone the way of Jorts.

Clippers are the annoying little brother of the Lakers, and these days charge closer to Lakers prices. If they're gonna be doing that, they gotta feature something better than a 35 year old Harden and Norm Powell  those guys aren't gonna put asses in the seats.

NBA's major problem is that there are just too many games...and unlike NFL where 30-40% of the games are 1 score games, basketball scoring system means you have lot less close games than a NFL game. Also these days, people have lot less time to follow 80+ games regular season..so all things combined, sports with long regular seasons will face viewership issues long term. Also, NBA games are not easy to access like NFL games. This should be main focus for Silver going forward...need to get atleast decent % of games every week accessible to anyone without cable.

Also.decent % of viewership NFL gets is also due to fantasy football. People really underrate how much boost fantasy gives to NFL ratings.

NBA execs are morons, they had a full day yesterday with no competition and botched it.

NBA was so so so much better than NFL today. I don’t care what the ratings say. I will defend basketball to the death.

Yea, the teams today have been put through the ringer with the scheduling the last few weeks. 3 games in 11 days. The losing Steelers and Texans have been brutalized by it, crawling to the end.

NFL took the L today. NBA is getting rave reviews while the NFL gave 2 garbage games and a Beyoncé performance.

NFL Christmas still has some work to do.

I find it so funny that many posters here are so bitter and butthurt over NFL scheduling couple games on Christmas. Why does it even matter? I for one glad I had options to choose from.

The NFL was never under any threat from the NBA in terms of ratings, that being said, Silver is trash and ratings being on the decline is entirely on him.

Let's be honest, only basketball purists tuned in. Everyone else was watching NFL.

Like someone mentioned, the NBA had a chance to schedule games on Christmas eve with no competition but Silver once again fumbled the ball. If the NFL wants Christmas games, let them have it. Going direct with them will always result in an L.

The NFL is a juggernaut that carries much wider appeal in the US, teams are more popular than individual players and every game is important & nationally/regionally televised. NBA much narrower appeal, regular season games mean nothing, players don’t care & maybe suit up or maybe not, RS games look nothing like playoff games.
