He plays no role in the Suns' future as a 29 year old player on a 1 year minimum deal. He signed that deal to be a starting Point Guard on a Playoff team/potential contender. So he has no reason to resign with them on a minimum deal next season.
So it just made more sense for Phoenix to give priority to their young players and the players on long term contracts.
are you certain? I looked at the gamelogs, and they were on a huge losing streak with him starting, after he was moved to the bench, they got a few mroe wins.
I mean I didn't follow them super closely, but they were 27-32 when he was completely removed from the starting lineup, which in the West meant already more or less that anything above a low play in spot will be almost impossible to achieve. Especially since nobody knew yet that Dallas will completely colapse and shut it down (they were still doing pretty ok at this point, even after the Luka trade),
From the games I saw and looking at his stats I'd say that he was this season the same player he always was. A really solid point guard, somewhere between low tier starter and high tier backup. So I don't really see him having a negative impact on games.
About the more wins part. They were pretty streaky all season and had a multiple win series and I remember them really looking like a potential contender early in the season. It was mostly impacted by 1 or 2 of Durant, Booker and Beal being injured and out of the lineup multiple times during the season. Especially Durant, with whom they had a record of 35-27 and who played in all games when Jones was moved to the bench besides the last 7, where they also went 1-6.
To a lesser extend another factor is definitely also replacing Nurkic with Nick Richards, so going from a Center that is also constantly injured to one that is healthy and plays.
